London's Telegraph newspaper reported that the Home Office had MI5 papers dispelling claims that the star was a Nazi sympathiser. The documents, which are still classified more than 50 years after the end of the war, detail how the actor offered to help Britain's security services. They show how Flynn was willing to exploit family connections in the then neutral Irish Republic for the Allied cause. Relatives and friends are now calling for the release of the documents, which they believe will restore the star's reputation following a series of biographies that have repeated claims that he secretly supported Hitler. The papers say the hell-raiser was a patriot who was willing to do all he could to help the Allied cause. His rejection by the armed forces because of a heart murmur made him determined to help in more “unconventional ways”. British Labour MP Harry Cohen has petitioned Home Secretary Jack Straw to release the secret files. Flynn, who was born in Hobart and who died in 1959, made his name in such films as The Adventures of Robin Hood. He was previously accused of sympathising with Hitler based on his association with Dr Hermann Erben, an Austrian who served in the German military intelligence.
