-Caveat Lector- >From Le Monde Diplomatique (linque at end) }}>Begin Introduction Contents Detailed contents Timeline Maps French version Le Monde diplomatique presents A special focus on the Middle East Frantic attempts in Israel to bring Ariel Sharon into a national emergency government, plus the use of tanks and helicopters against towns in the West Bank and Gaza and the blockade of the Palestinian autonomous territories, spell the end of the peace process that began with the Oslo declaration of 13 September 1993. The new intifada signifies the Palestinian's determination to win acceptance of their right to self-determination and establish an independent state in the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. It also signifies their rejection of interim arrangements that keep them in a situation of dependence. At the end of the Camp David summit meeting between US president Bill Clinton, Israel's prime minister Ehud Barak, and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, held from 11 to 24 July 2000, the two sides nevertheless undertook to pursue their efforts to reach an agreement on all permanent status issues as soon as possible. The outstanding issues, however, (which include final status and borders, Jerusalem and the status of the holy places, the right of return of 3.6 million Palestinian refugees, and water rights) are the most difficult of all, and the two sides are far apart on most of them. The crux of all the conflicts in the region is the future of the Palestinians. The present deadlock in the solution of the Arab-Israeli conflict - accompanied by a freeze in negotiations between Israel and Syria comes at a time when a new generation of leaders has taken power in Jordan, Syria and Qatar, and is about to do so in Saudi Arabia and Palestine. A new chapter is beginning in the history of the Middle East, which faces unprecedented economic, political and social challenges. Are we witnessing the final collapse of the peace process ? Is the region heading for a new war ? And is the political confrontation between Arabs and Israelis about to give way to a conflict of religions ? This focus feature clarifies the background and the issues at stake. It contains all the major texts on the Israeli-Arab conflict - from the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which accepted the principle of a " Jewish national home in Palestine ", to the Oslo peace accords - including all the main UN resolutions and the major statements of the Palestinian resistance movement. It also provides timelines, discussions of key issues, maps, and links to web sites and Le Monde Diplomatique articles. His task is to demonstrate repeatedly and in depth that not only the emperor but even the "democratic" State has no clothes; that all governments subsist by exploitive rule over the public; and that such rule is the reverse of objective necessity. He strives to show that the existence of taxation and the State necessarily sets up a class division between the exploiting rulers and the exploited ruled. He seeks to show that the task of the court intellectuals who have always supported the State has ever been to weave mystification in order to induce the public to accept State rule and that these intellectuals obtain, in return, a share in the power and pelf extracted by the rulers from their deluded subjects.
