On October 3, at 9 P.M., FRONTLINE kicks off its 20th anniversary season with "The Man Who Knew," the extraordinary saga of FBI Special Agent John O'Neill.
As the bureau's top counter-terrorism agent, O'Neill had investigated the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Africa and the USS Cole in Yemen. He came to believe the United States should kill Osama bin Laden before Al Qaeda launched a devastating attack on America. But O'Neill's often lonely voice was muted by a headquarters bureaucracy that found his hot pursuit and James Bond style an anathema. His controversial years at the helm of the New York FBI's terrorism section provide a rare glimpse inside the bureau and help answer the question: What did the government know?
In "The Man Who Knew," FRONTLINE traces O'Neill's growing awareness of the threat posed by the emerging, global Islamic fundamentalist terrorist network. His relentless pursuit of bin Laden and Al Qaeda helped yield much of the information the United States needed about the pending attacks on September 11th. Yet John O'Neill was no longer with the FBI on that fateful day: Forced out of the job he loved, he had taken a job in the private sector just weeks before as director of security at the World Trade Center. He died there when the buildings collapsed.
Through interviews with FBI officials, friends, and family--and with access to never-before-seen documents and video--FRONTLINE tells the story of the man who knew and a bureaucracy that didn't want to listen.
