They got themselves up in glittering silver and played astronaut.
Or space cadet.
Or maybe Barbarella.
Anyway, they gave a lovely light.
Members of the Makua Auxiliary to the Children's Home Society chose "2001: A
Space Odyssey" as the theme of their 49th summer party, and had it in Balboa
Park at the Aerospace Museum.
By tradition, Makua members dress alike for the annual party, but this time
they had a choice of several costume designs. All were silver, worn with
assorted electronic jewelry. It flashed.
Stacy Carlson and Madeline Hossman were co-chairs.
They and their husbands, Ray Carlson and Steve Hossman, greeted a crowd that
included Anne and Dr. Ned Chambers, Sandra and Sheldon Sherman, Gale and
James Hill (she's the Makua president), Maureen and Jim Manos, Renee and Dr.
Steve Bridge (she's the incoming president), Kimiko and Douglas Augustine,
Karen and Thomas Driscoll, Ann and Robert Gallagher, Mary and Dr. Kevin
Haynes, Leesie and Paul van Roon, Jennifer and Robert Heft (she was in
charge of Makua costumes), Helen Kinnaird, and Gina Lew Platt and Jeff
Platt.
Amy and Richard Lindsay were there, and so were Karen and Richard Jimenez,
Jeri and Dr. Bill Koltun, Sue and Ray Lee, Cheryl and Mike Moder, Valerie
and Louis Suter, Kiki and Dr. Dan Morton, Jackie and David Niddrie, Kimberly
and Randy Prendergast, Linda and Dick Rees, Michelle and David Lockwood,
Sandra Rockhill, Barbara and Peter Zeitler, Elise and Rob Rogerson, Susan
and Fred Smith, Betsy and Dr. Donald Tecca, Pam and Raymond Volker, and
Kathy and Howard Williams.
Culinary Concepts catered. Hors d'oeuvres included chicken and leek tartlets
and Thai chicken profiteroles. The dinner buffets offered carne asada tacos,
chicken fajitas, Caesar salads, Jamaican jerk chicken skewers, basmati rice,
rigatoni and such. Desserts included tiramisu, ladyfingers and other treats.
Sue and Harry Bubnack were there (she's development manager for the
Children's Home Society), along with Lynne Copeland, Wendy Gillespie and
Marty Capdevilla, Cathy and Elliot Kanter, Debbie Malloy and Ed Chapin,
Monique Aschkenasy, Wendy and James Nash, Nikki St. Germain and Dave
Jackson, Mukesh Assommul, Mari and Mike Fink, Phyllis and Dr. Vital Haynes,
and Eileen and Leo Sullivan.
Doug Augustine was the top bidder for a chance to be a fighter pilot for a
day, flying air-to-air combat (with a trained pilot sharing the controls) at
Air Combat USA.
Gale and Jim Hill bought an October dinner at Top O' the Cove with Col.
Oliver North and Duane "Dewey" Clarridge, formerly of the CIA. North will
sign two of his books, "Under Fire: An American Story" and "One More
Mission: Oliver North Returns to Vietnam." Clarridge will autograph "A Spy
for All Seasons: My Life in the CIA."
Wendy Gillespie and Marty Capdevilla were the winners of a vacation at
Covert Ops, an action-adventure-fantasy camp.
A holiday on Maui at the Grand Wailea Resort went to Sonja and Carlos
Zozula.
The biggest surprise of the auction was the intense competition for Item No.
2: Dinner for eight prepared in your home by members of a Point Loma gourmet
club.
Two male guests -- not Makua husbands -- squared off in a bidding battle,
and the dinner went for $6,000.
