R http://news.excite.com/news/r/000413/22/wto-china-mission White House cancels congressional mission to China Updated 10:16 PM ET April 13, 2000 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has canceled a April 14-20 U.S. congressional trade mission to China, administration officials said on Thursday. Commerce Secretary William Daley had planned to lead the delegation as part of a White House effort to round up votes in Congress for a landmark trade agreement with China. But several lawmakers who were expected to join Daley on the trip dropped out at the last minute, forcing the White House to call off the mission, the officials told Reuters. The White House still plans to take a delegation of U.S. lawmakers to China starting April 24. That mission is expected to be led by Daley, as well as Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, administration officials said. The mission starting April 14 was scrapped after U.S. union leaders said they would target lawmakers who took part in the White House-sponsored trips. Administration officials said most of the lawmakers canceled because they wanted to spend the upcoming congressional recess in their home districts.
