People like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage are having a field day. Here's a friendly American-as-apple-pie excerpt from a Savage show aired on May 12: Right now, even people sitting on the fence would like George Bush to drop a nuclear weapon on an Arab country... I tell you right now -- the largest percentage of Americans would like to see a nuclear weapon dropped on a major Arab capital. They don't even care which one. They'd like an indiscriminate use of a nuclear weapon... In fact, Christianity has been one of the great salvations on planet Earth. It's what's necessary in the Middle East... I think these people need to be forcibly converted to Christianity. ...It's the only thing that can probably turn them into human beings. And another from Limbaugh, whose listeners understand full well who "they" refers to: They're the ones who are sick... They're the ones who are perverted. They are the ones who are dangerous. They are the ones who are subhuman. They are the ones who are human debris, not the United States of America and not our soldiers and not our prison guards. Now President Bush has jumped in to use the murder to revive some of his oldie-but-goodie deceptions--specifically, the notion that Saddam Hussein had ties to Al Qaeda: At a fund-raising lunch in Bridgeton, Missouri, Bush said Zarqawi was an example of the threat posed by the ousted Iraqi leader. "We knew he (Saddam) had terrorist ties. The person responsible for the Berg death, Zarqawi, was in and out of Baghdad prior to our arrival, for example," Bush said. Of course, back in September, Bush finally admitted that "we have no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with the 11 September attacks." But who cares about truth or consistency in this Administration. In fact, the Bush Administration seems to be practically running Zarqawi's PR campaign--they first mentioned his name in the run-up to the war as the Saddam connection and they released his letter earlier this year calling for a sectarian war between Sunnis and Shi'is. But as Col. Dhia Hussein of Baghdad's anti-terrorism unit told the Los Angeles Times in March about the US preoccupation with Zarqawi, They are always exaggerating about Al Qaeda... No witnesses have come and talked to me about Zarqawi. The only thing is that he is mentioned in the newspapers. And a -million reward. Who is this man? . Maybe he exists - such characters exist.
