Rep. Kolbe's assets could mean he's in millionaire category
Jim Kolbe: Much of his net worth is in stocks.

Financial report contrasts with Rep. Grijalva's

One of Southern Arizona's two members of the U.S. House of Representatives may be a millionaire.

New financial disclosure reports show that veteran Rep. Jim Kolbe has assets at somewhere between $882,000 and $4.2 million. Much of the Tucson Republican's net worth is tied up in the stock market.

By contrast, first-term Rep. Raúl Grijalva totaled his assets at between $150,000 and $600,000.

That range is all the information the public gets about the net worth of their Congress members. That's because the reporting requirements permit federal lawmakers to list their holdings, income and liabilities in one of 11 value categories.

Kolbe's assets do not make him the richest member of the state's delegation. That distinction belongs to new Congressman Trent Franks, a Glendale Republican, who said his assets at the end of last year were somewhere between $2.3 million and $10.8 million.

Fellow first-term Rep. Rick Renzi of Flagstaff is not far behind, listing his assets at somewhere between $2.5 million and $8 million. The biggest single item on that list is his interest in Patriot Insurance Inc. in Sonoita, valued in the $1 million to $5 million range.

Much of Kolbe's assets are his stock market investments. One mutual fund is worth between $50,000 and $100,000, though most of his are valued in the $1,000 to $15,000 range.

He also owns an efficiency apartment attached to his Washington, D.C., residence which he values at between $250,000 and $500,000, a property he said brings in between $5,000 and $15,000 a year.

Kolbe also has a one-third interest in 300 acres in Sonoita valued in the $100,000 to $250,000 range.

His overall income is between $854,000 and $2.9 million, virtually all of that listed as coming from his stock portfolio.

The largest item in Grijalva's portfolio is a rental property in Tucson worth between $50,000 and $100,000, which brings in between $1,000 and $2,500 annually. Of equal value is his supplemental pension, which Grijalva reported generates between $5,000 and $15,000 in income.

Most of the balance is his stock holdings, much of which produce little income.

His liabilities are in the $25,000 to $65,000 range.

Among others in the state's delegation, Democrat Ed Pastor of Phoenix, who formerly represented Southern Arizona, reported his assets at between $416,000 and $945,000.

About half of that is in a pension plan.

Pastor lists less than $2,000 a year in income other than his salary.

John Shadegg, a Republican from Phoenix, posted assets of between $95,000 and $250,000, including two individual retirement accounts, his retirement account from his time working for the state Attorney General's Office and a one-quarter interest in a family home in Prescott. He posted liabilities between $75,000 and $165,000.

Second-term Congressman Jeff Flake had assets worth between $18,000 and $95,000, the largest of which is a mutual fund valued at between $15,000 and $50,000.

He listed no income other than his congressional salary. But Flake reported that his wife, Cheryl, was paid $500 a month to be on the payroll of his re-election campaign.

At the bottom of the reported net wealth list is J.D. Hayworth.

Like Flake, he had no outside income.

And, like Flake, he found a job for his wife. Mary Hayworth earns $2,000 a month working for Team PAC, Hayworth's political action committee, which raises and gives money to other congressional candidates.

I will do." - Edward Everett Hale
