--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector-January 12, 2003 Please Distribute Widely Dear Colleague, "DEMOCRACY IS WHAT WE CONSTRUCT" That is is the title of an essay by Authentic Journalist Andrea Arenas Alípaz, now posted on Salón Chingón, the online campus of the School of Authentic Journalism: http://www.salonchingon.com/readingroom/bolivialaw.php?city=ny Arenas, reporting from La Paz, Bolivia, will be joining us tonight at the "Narco News Chat" session as we occupy, at 9 p.m., the New York Times online Drug Policy Forum. Also joining us for this online conversation will be Andrew Grice, treasurer of The Fund for Authentic Journalism, plus Narco News webmaster Dan Feder, plus various auténticos, including George Sanchez and Andrea Daugirdas, to help us analyze current events regarding the drug war and democracy in Latin America, and share the good news of how the re-launch of Narco News is coming closer to blastoff. Grice, of The Fund - http://www.authenticjournalism.org - will also report how Civil Society's donor democracy campaign is going, and tells me he's ready to announce a hard number of how much has come in over the past twelve days since it was announced, and we'll talk about this new model for financing journalism that is free from advertising or large donor pressures. Some readers have already sent me questions in advance at [EMAIL PROTECTED] - thanks! (You'll also be able to ask and answer questions live and online at the forum tonight.) Arenas' essay is especially timely, and I'm glad she'll be on hand to field questions from the heart of the Andes, because this matter of how "democracy" is defined is becoming a more heated topic now that a certain illigitimate, election fraud-installed, court-appointed, regime to the North is bandying that word about Latin America... from Bolivia to Venezuela and elsewhere... The definition of that word is the current "line of scrimmage" in the battle that Narco News is about to unleash. Arenas writes: "A blockade is democracy. Demonstrations are democracy. Democracy is the voice of a people that rises up against those who harm it. Democracy is found in the acts of history that we have taken that enable us to defend her... "Bolivia has yet another enemy to confront when it comes to true democracy. Ironically, it is an enemy that preaches democracy, one that is only valid, and viable as long as it follows its own standards and definition of democracy: the American Embassy. The American Embassy has a long history of interventions in Bolivia’s politics, and today the situation turns Bolivia into a country in which U.S. meddling is far from unusual, for it is they who decide what democracy really is..." She then unveils a classified State Department document, unearthed recently by Jeremy Bigwood through use of the Freedom of Information Act, that shows that while Washington preaches "democracy" it is at the same hour meddling by spending USAid money in Bolivian electoral politics to support one political party and to harm another. (Imagine the scandal if, say, a foreign government's documents were found to have revealed money spent to help the Democrats over the Republicans, or vice versa, in U.S. elections... well, at least after tonight, you'll be able to say that you read it in the New York Times... albeit through the readers' forum!) If you already have a NY Times online account (it's free), simply go to this link at 9 p.m. ET tonight: http://forums.nytimes.com/top/opinion/readersopinions/forums/national/drugpolicy\/index.html?page=recent If you don't yet have one, you can sign up for one here: http://www.nytimes.com/auth/login In the meantime, if you would like to submit questions in advance, just email me. Special thanks to Dean Becker of the Drug Truth Network and host of the popular Cultural Baggage radio show on stations throughout the U.S., who organized tonight's forum and will also be on hand to help with this international conversation. For more info on that great and worthy project, see: http://www.cultural-baggage.com/kpft.htm Meanwhile, Narco News, like democracy, is also what we construct from below. Stop on by tonight and help us think, out loud, and advance democracy in journalism, together. >From somewhere in a country called América, Al Giordano Publisher The Narco News Bulletin http://www.narconews.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] P.S.
