I live in Michigan and I'm a long time Narco News reader. I'm the Vice President and Treasurer of The Fund for Authentic Journalism, the new fiscal sponsor for Narco News. By now most of you have heard the wonderful news. We found a way to save the Narco News. To bring it back, not just with the unparalleled reporting you'd come to rely on, but with expanded coverage and innovative new features to involve readers on a level unheard of in any newspaper in English, Spanish or Portuguese. 2004 promises to be the year of Narco News' greatest impact yet. But we are not out of the woods just yet, which I why I write you today. To overcome the funding problems which caused Narco News to suspend publication in October, we've organized The Fund for Authentic Journalism as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Michigan. This will allow us to keep fundraising and editorial functions separate and to broaden our funding base. Never again will your online newspaper reporting on the drug war and democracy from Latin America have to depend on large donations to publish. Insuring a solid financial basis to keep Narco News' journalists working safely in the field was mandatory, and with your help, The Fund for Authentic Journalism will do exactly that. Thanks to a generous $30,000 matching grant from the Tides Fund for Drug Policy Reform, we are well on our way, but there is still much left to do. By April 18th we need to raise $30,000. This will insure a minimum budget for Narco News to keep its journalists working safely in the field and provide for an August 2004 session of The School for Authentic Journalism. Thanks to so many of you, we've already raised $10,360, one third of our goal and only five days into the new year. Now we need everyone who possibly can, to chip in whatever they can to make up the difference. Because of our matching funds grant, each dollar contributed right now means two dollars will fund the work of Narco News. Every contribution, however large or small, is crucial. Our fundraising goal for the year itself, isn't even measured in dollars, but in finding 1000 individual donors. Your 2 or 25 dollar contribution means just as much to the success of this project as another's 80 or 800 dollars. The important part is to give now, so we bring Narco News back to full publication as soon as possible and make our April 18th goal.
