Dear Colleagues,

We're just now back in the Narco Newsroom after this week's international
gathering against Plan Colombia in Mexico City. (Final count: 880 delegates
representing 108 organizations from 34 countries.) Stay tuned for further
reports.

A few updates as we catch up on email....

San Francisco Bay Guardian Editorial:

The SF Bay Guardian, one of the oldest and most important alternative
weeklies in the United States, published an editorial today supporting and
expanding upon last Friday's Narco News report on Ethics Problems at
Alternet. The Bay Guardian editorial provides additional links on what it
calls "a new firestorm in alternative media circles":

The Boston Phoenix's veteran media critic Dan Kennedy, despite taking a
leave of absence to write an upcoming book for Rodale Press, continues to
monitor the press and is covering this developing story of alterna-media
ethics on his website. We welcome Dan back to the ranks of freelance writers
and point you to his online observations at:

Another authentic journalist who has weighed in on this story is novelist
and former Online Journalism Review columnist Ken Layne (who also has some
choice and quotable words about the drug war). His weblog is as addictive as
the drugs that we report on:

Finally, our apologies, although it was out of our control, that the
yahoogroups email listserve was down for repairs for the past two days (does
the new Eschelon software really take that long to upload, dudes?), causing
a delay in yesterday's alert about our report from Mexico City where we
spoke with FARC Comandante Marco León Calarcá and corrected bad journalism
by AP, Reuters, the NY Times and others.

Coming next on Narco News -- the full transcript of U.S. State Department
fixer Randy Beers' deposition last week by attorneys for Ecuador's peasant
farmers and the International Labor Rights Fund in the historic legal
proceedings against DynCorp and its herbicide spraying program over the
Amazon.
