To my Internet friends and supporters,

What follows is an excerpt from an informal letter written to me by Al
Giordano from Venezuela:

"IN RECENT DAYS, two things happened in Venezuela: the collapse of the
"astro-turf opposition" and Chávez's first appearance in public since the
day the coup attempt failed, April 13th-14th.

"As the national dailies and private TV and radio chains announced the
"March of the Militares" against Chávez on page one and at the top of the
news, the "revolt of the spoiled brats" gathered at the plaza in front of
the hotel I was at. There were grand predictions that legions of soldiers
and retired generals would march in uniform against the Chávez government,
with the threat of a new coup implied by the very nature of the scene. Here
is what happened. 1,300 well-dressed and jeweled upperclassmen and women
gathered (a former American priest friend counted them one by one as they
passed). There were precisely two uniforms present in the march... both
retired generals, but NOT wearing their uniforms, rather, holding them in
front of their chests on hangars..."

End of excerpt:

Normally this story would have been edited and included in a larger report
on the Narco News website http://www.narconews.com . Unfortunately nearly a
week has passed without this hilarious and telling information reaching much
of the world.

My friend Al Giordano has done a very noble and wise thing: he has taken a
de facto vow of poverty. All of the fabulous reporting he does from the
Southern Front in the Purported War on Drugs is done on a (used)shoestring
budget. This keeps Al close to the people of the region. It keeps his
perspective real. It keeps him unencumbered so he can pick up and move to
where stories are. It also keeps him from having funds that could become
targets for lawsuits meant to silence his important voice.

Last year one of the more comical elements of Narco News' precedent setting
legal victory (details:
http://www.narconews.com/warroom.html ) was that it was a case in which one
of the wealthiest people in the world sued a borderline homeless journalist.
It seems this absurdity did not escape the judge.

Al's only possessions are a laptop and a guitar (which you should only
mention to him if you have a lot of time!). The laptop represents Narco
News' editorial offices and printing facility. Crisis struck during Al's
recent trip to Venezuela when the laptop died. I suppose we can take solace
that it met its demise on free soil. Now Al has to attempt to do his work
from cyber-cafes. He can hang on for a bit but unless he gets a new laptop
(and I do mean new because Al puts a lot of miles on a keyboard in short
order) I fear Narco News will perish.

I will be sending Al a donation in hopes of preventing such a calamity. If
any of you have enjoyed my work (not to mention Al's!) and can afford to
help out, I humbly request that you do what you can. If you'd like, consider
it a birthday gift (July 3) to me. Since my website is non-commercial and
completely free of charge I had been planning to make some sort of charity
pitch, Narco News is this year's cause.

Checks can be made payable to:

"LiveArt1st"

...and by noting on the check:

"to support the work of Al Giordano"

address for contributions:

LiveArt1st
51 MacDougal Street, Suite 257
New York, NY 10012

LiveArt1st is a 501c3 artists' support organization that is registered in
New York State.

There is no "Paypal" or net billing available. You must either write a check
or buy a money order and put it in the mail.

I will in no way keep track of who contributes. This is strictly a plea from
a supporter of the authentic journalism of Narco News to a group of people
likely to have sympathy for the cause. What you
decide to do is up to you. I know many of you have already given of your
time, lives and resources in a way similar to Al.

I'm willing to do a benefit for this cause and we're looking into it right
now. If it happens, you'll be the first to know!

Finally, this is my idea and not Al's but I'm sure he won't be too upset
that I chose to share this with my mailing list and site traffic.

Thanks for taking the time to consider this and thanks so much to all of you
for helping to make my mailing list and website worthwhile.

With best wishes for peace and prosperity,

Barry Crimmins

PS- I needed a few days off after a weekend of travel but will get some
quips out tomorrow. In the interim I do have a new audio essay on my site:
