--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector- Daily News 5/14/04Chase assist in Nazi funds Chase Manhattan Bank, predecessor to J.P. Morgan Chase, helped the Nazis raise over $20 million in foreign exchange between 1936 and 1941, a new report shows. For its work, Chase collected over $500,000 in fees, some of which came from the sale of discounted, blocked currency mainly from the accounts of Jews who had fled Germany. "We long ago addressed the historic involvement" of the bank, a J.P. Morgan spokesman said. "The firm issued a public acknowledgment and apology on this troubling matter more than four years ago." The new report is part of a book titled "U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis," which includes information from 240,000 previously unreleased pages of Federal Bureau of Investigation documents. The report said Chase avoided prosecution when its lead lawyer, a former U.S. Attorney, threatened to reveal FBI, Army and Navy sources and methods in open court.
