Things Slid Redux

(The Steamshovel e-wire normally known as Things Are Gonna Slide)
September 11, 2002

9/11 FLASHBACKS

Steamshovel asked some of its correspondents to give a one-or-two
paragraph flash on when they felt the impact of the 9/11 disasters. Here are
the replies:

JIM CREGAN, STEAMSHOVEL PRESS - The impact I felt was certainly
conditioned by those around me as I live overseas, in Italy. Initially everyone
was in shock and disbelief. Terror had reached a new level that no one had
imagined. Suddenly the theories about terrorists using biological, chemical or
nuclear weapons did not ring hollow anymore. But after the initial shock, local
opinion seemed to divide into three groups: the first realizing how real this
problem still is and offering sympathy to me. Quite often this was followed with
suggestions on how to solve the problem, such as kill all of the Arabs or all of
the Jews & Arabs in the world; the second and most popular opinion was that
people were happy it happened to us and not to them; and the third group
opinion, also quite prevalent was that the Americans had it coming to them.
This is mainly due to our arrogant, unilateral foreign policy and our blind
support of Israel.

Maybe there are other ways of fighting terrorism and making peace besides
forcing our will on others and always pretending to be in the right.

DON ECKER, UFO MAGAZINE - I was in bed and sound asleep when the
telephone began ringing. I rolled over and grabbed it giving a "sleepy" hello. It
was my friend Dwight and he was screaming into the phone "Christ Don,
we've been attacked!" "Huh?!" was my brain numbed reply. "Dwight, what the
hell are you talking about?" "Turn on the TV" he yelled.

I stumbled out to the living room and turned on the set and there was a live
picture of the WTC burning. I saw the picture of the second plane slam into the
second tower and to this day do not recall if it was live or a replay. My
stomach sank when I realized this was deliberate. Then they said the
Pentagon was hit. I was waiting for news from somewhere in LA that we were
next. What atrocity awaited Angelino's? I'm still watching and waiting.

ROB STERLING, KONFORMIST.COM - On 9-11, I was living in downtown L.A.
I received a ranting phone call early in the morning, warning me I had to
evacuate, because "they" have attacked New York, and now a plane was
heading towards L.A. I first wondered if this was a bad joke by a friend. So I
turned on the TV and saw what was going on. (It turned out the person calling
had misunderstood the news report: one of the planes that hit the WTC was
originally headed for L.A.)

Needless to say, I was immediately skeptical of the whole thing, and
wondered if the attack was a scam created by the Bush Mob to gain power
and desperately needed legitimacy for its Pennsylvania Avenue squatting.
Nothing I have seen in the past year has led me to be any less skeptical.

Side note: at the time, I was working on an article for the second Disinfo Book
collection at the time (Everything You Know Is Wrong), and the article, "Viva
Kadaffi!" was about the creation of Third World bogeyman enemies to cover
for Team USA's reprehensible foreign policy. I focused much of the article on
Mo Kadaffi, and was actually planning to call the Libyan embassy in New
York with some questions I had for the article. Needless to say, one of my
greater skills is to grasp conclusions quickly, and I quickly surmised that
September 11, 2001 would not be a good day to call the Libyan embassy in
New York. I sure am one sharp cookie.

ALEXANDRA BRUCE, author of THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT
MURDER: PARALLEL UNIVERSES AND THE PHYSICS OF INSANITY - I
lived a block away from the World Trade Center for eight years, in a great,
cheap apartment on the top floor of an old building with huge windows and
incredible downtown views. I moved to Maiden Lane back in 1993, a month
after the first bombing. For years, I joked that I lived at Ground Zero. It was
very eerie to me when the whole world started calling it that.

There are absolutely no words to describe the experience of what happened
to my old neighborhood.

I loved it down there, because among other things, it was so quiet at night -
except for the odd homeless dude shrieking into the canyons at 4 AM. I guess
he thought it was cool that he could actually hear the echoes of his screams -
something that is probably impossible anywhere else, at any hour in New
York City.

I loved living there - but it was definitely creepy. There was always this spooky
undercurrent of industrial espionage and terrorism and the knowledge that if
anyone hated Amerikkka enough and had the means, that nuking my
neighborhood would be the first thing they'd do. (The bright side of this story is
that it wasn't nuked!) Con Ed would constantly be digging up the same hole
on the corner of John and Broadway, untangling the fiber optic lines, which
kept getting re-tangled. In 1994, I saw a massive FEMA exercise from my
windows, using what appeared to be every fire truck and helicopter in the
New York area. (It reminded me of the Keystone Cops!) During Nor'easters,
the Chase building would generate this spooky, loud hum, sort of like a like a
giant, off-key harmonica.

I had five separate UFO sightings from that apartment over those years,
always accompanied by at least one other witness. That UFO footage that
was circulating on the Internet, taken from a helicopter, was shot from directly
above my old apartment. Those weird, ultra-fast-moving objects caught on
Japanese TV were among some of the many different-shaped things that I
saw from that perch. I always had the sense that the tip of Manhattan was an
immense interdimensional vortex.

Equally strange was this whole world of the stock market happening only a
few feet away from me. Conspiratologists love to dehumanize traders and
brokers but they're just red-blooded Americans, trying to make a buck like
everyone else in this joint. I wouldn't wish their spiritually-punishing job or
their grimy commute on my worst enemy. Don't hate them. Their job sux.
(They just might not have figured that out until now...)

I was out of the country for the first time in six years when it happened. From
what I saw on TV, it didn't look like there was any way that my building could
have been left standing. I was worried about my roomate and hoping she'd
already left for work. When I did get in touch with her, she told me their were
body parts on the roof, about 10 feet from where our heads would be. I guess
those were from the second plane, which exploded out the West side of the
first tower, right over us. I spoke to a lot of my neighbors who had been there
for the whole thing. Stories too horrible to get into here.

When I finally was allowed to return from Brazil, I was amazed to see how
incredibly surgical the collapse of the towers had been in their destruction.
Really, really bizarre. It looked like a contemporary version of something
Ebenezer Scrooge might have been shown by the Ghost of Christmas Past.
The ghostly pallor of all the buildings, with micronized drywall sprayed on
every surface, vertical and horizontal, as far as the eye could see, huge
snowdrifts of the stuff blowing off all of the rooftops.

It made breathing tough. I won't even try to describe the smell...

I haven't been able to think about that place ever since FEMA paid me to
leave.

That nook of the world might be the node of evil to some people but it's also
just another neighborhood in New York.

TIMOTHY GREEN BECKLEY, WWW.CONSPIRACYJOURNAL.COM - It
seemed so surreal watching the events unfold on CNN. Initially, I
had no reason to think that it wasn't a terrible accident. After all, I had been
editor of FRONT PAGE DISASTERS magazine back in the late 70s and had
done several stories on the airplane that crashed into the Empire State
Building. Somehow - at first -- this seemed like a repeat of this tragic event of
many years before." Of course, it didn't take us long to realize the facts were
not to be a repeat of history, but a
very tramatic state of global affairs to be used to "their" (you fill in who "they"
might be) advantage. God certainly was looking the other way on 9/11.

REMY CHEVALIER, WWW.ENDSECRECY.COM - I was listening to Howard
Stern! So I turned on CNN, and then I saw the second plane hit... I knew right
then and there a bunch of idiots were dying for Allah! When the first tower
came down, I knew the second wasn't far behind. It was evident the fire
melted the support structure. I'd studied the WTC many times. I knew the
architecture. I hated the buildings when they went up. I met Petit in Paris, the
French ropewalker, while he was preparing for his stunt. That was the only
memorable thing I could associate with the WTC. The towers gave me the
creeps, inside and out. I only went up once to visit a friend who worked for the
attorney general. My dad always told me say I told you so! I live in
Connecticut, but Wetlands, the nightclub I helped create 12 years ago, was
hosting its closing party that week. Instead of a bang, Wetlands would go out
with a whimper. The towers are no big loss. I just wish the morons who
brought them down got everybody out first. There's a joke about lawyers...
What's a hundred lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start! I'm not
that cruel. But I'm also not crying over the fate of 3000 money changers...
Christ turned over their tables in the temple! He didn't murder them. They
murdered him - or so the fairy tale says. I saw 9/11 as another opportunity to
finally stop the madness. But nothing has changed. Violence solves nothing. It
just makes things worse. The buildings, what the people who worked there
stood for, the almighty dollar, was no big loss. Instead I was terrified at the
certainty America would embark on a relentless campaign of vengeance. As
well as the horrifying vision of top fashion models getting buried under the
rubble. The tents for Fashion Week were right down the street. Cold, isn't?

LEN BRACKEN, author of SHADOW GOVERNMENT - I was in Riga when I
heard the news, juggling a copy of The Economist's Pro Logo issue (in
response to Naomi Klein's book No Logo) and a rose. A member of the
collective that had just staged a citywide, week-long anti-corporate art
campaign was bidding me farewell when he suddenly said, 'Oh, my God. Len,
you're not going to believe this...' I hung up the pay phone and wandered
down the street to look at the television through the window of a nearby bar,
the Ay Karamba, and I knew right away that we wouldn't know what really
happened for a long time to come. I didn't let this painful event distract me or
the young Latvian brunette, who was soon in my arms, from our pleasure. We
were so oblivious that it wasn't until I reached the airport the next day that I
found out US airports were closed.
