'Fahrenheit' Sets Single Day Sales Record in NYC Film
Opens in 868 Theaters Nationwide Friday Published on
Thursday, June 24, 2004 by Reuters
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0624-03.htm

NEW YORK - Director Michael Moore’s controversial
documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" turned on the box office
heat in its first day in theaters breaking single-day
records at the two New York City theaters where it
played.

The movie, which aims a critical eye at President Bush
and his prosecution of the war in Iraq, sold $49,000
worth of tickets at the Loew’s Village 7 theater,
beating the venue’s single-day record of $43,435 held
by 1997’s "Men in Black," according to distributors
Lions Gate Films and IFC Films.

At the Lincoln Plaza theater, "Fahrenheit 9/11" took in
more than $30,000 to top the $24,013 set by "Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in 2000.

A spokesman for Lions Gate Films said the company
debuted the movie in the two theaters to help build
good word-of-mouth - friend telling friend - publicity
ahead of the wide debut Friday when it plays in 868
theaters in all 50 states.

The film has caused a storm of controversy because
director Moore, whose past work includes Oscar-winning
documentary "Bowling for Columbine," makes a case that
the Bush administration was determined to invade Iraq
following the Sept. 11 attacks.

The movie links Bush family members and business
associates with wealthy Saudi Arabian families,
including that of Osama bin Laden, and Moore clearly
wants to see the president fail to win reelection in
this fall’s presidential campaign.

Groups have organized support for and against the
movie, and audiences appear to be keen to see it.

Online ticket service Fandango.com Wednesday reported
that "Fahrenheit 9/11" was making up 48 percent of
advance ticket sales for the weekend ahead, compared to
11 percent for current box office champ "Dodgeball" and
9 percent for "Spider-Man 2," which opens June 30.

Cheney Utters 'F-Word' in Senate - Aides Published on
Thursday, June 24, 2004 by Reuters
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0624-13.htm

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney blurted out the
"F word" at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont
during a heated exchange on the Senate floor,
congressional aides said on Thursday.

'GO F___ YOURSELF' CHENEY SNARLED AT SEN PATRICK LEAHY
Vice President Dick Cheney was chief executive officer
of Halliburton before he became George Bush's running
mate.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in a terse discussion
between the two that touched on politics, religion and
money, with Cheney finally telling Leahy to "f--- off"
or "go f--- yourself," the aides said.

"I think he was just having a bad day," Leahy was
quoted as saying on CNN, which first reported the
incident. "I was kind of shocked to hear that kind of
language on the floor."

"That doesn't sound like language the vice president
would use but there was a frank exchange of views,"
said Cheney spokesman Kevin Kellems.

According to congressional aides, Leahy said hello to
Cheney following the taking of the Senate group photo
on the floor of the chamber.

Cheney, who is president of the Senate, then ripped
into Leahy for the Democratic senator's criticism this
week of alleged war profiteering in Iraq by
Halliburton, the oil services company that Cheney once
ran.

Leahy and other Democrats have called for congressional
hearings into whether the vice president helped the
firm win lucrative contracts in Iraq after the U.S.-led
war that toppled Saddam Hussein.

During their exchange, Leahy noted that Republicans had
accused Democrats of being anti-Catholic because they
are opposed to some of President Bush's anti-abortion
judges, the aides said.

That's when Cheney unloaded with the "F-bomb," aides
said.

According to Senate rules, profanity is not permitted
in the chamber. But when the exchange occurred between
Leahy and Cheney, the Senate was not in session so
there was technically no foul.

Supreme Court Refuses to Approve the Immunity from
Discovery Sought by Vice President Cheney

http://www.nsarchive.org

Washington D.C., June 24, 2004 - The United States
Supreme Court today remanded to the D.C. Circuit Court
of Appeals a case concerning the application of a
federal open government law to the Energy Task Force
chaired by Vice President Cheney in 2001.

"Although today's decision permits the Vice President
to continue to delay release of details about who wrote
the nation's energy policy, the Supreme Court refused
to accept the radical argument voiced by his lawyers
that the Administration is free from any inquiry into
how it conducts its affairs," explained Meredith Fuchs,
the Archive's General Counsel.

In 2001, President Bush established an advisory
committee on energy policy, and appointed Vice
President Cheney chairman of the committee. After the
committee made its recommendations, the Sierra Club and
Judicial Watch filed suit arguing that that the
advisory committee violated the Federal Advisory
Committee Act (FACA) and that the committee should
release its documents to the public. Vice President
Cheney has argued that the committee is not required to
disclose who participated in its meetings. The National
Security Archive, along with a coalition of
organizations, filed an amicus curiae brief in the
Supreme Court in support of the Sierra Club and
Judicial Watch's position. The joint statement of the
coalition is available on the Archive's website.

IRAQ WAR COSTS MOUNTING A Study by the Institute for
Policy Studies and Foreign Policy In Focus

Announcing the release of: Paying the Price: The
Mounting Costs of the Iraq War

The Institute for Policy Studies and Foreign Policy In
Focus are proud to announce the release of, "Paying the
Price: The Mounting Costs of the Iraq War." This study
is the first comprehensive account of the costs of the
Iraq war and the ensuing occupation to the U.S., Iraq,
and the world.

The report is available online at:
http://www.ips-dc.org/iraq/costsofwar/

This report demonstrates that we have paid a very high
price for the war and have become less secure at home
and in the world.

Most Americans are somewhat aware of the body count for
the United States and its allies, now amounting to 952
dead and 5,134 wounded. Yet, most are not aware that
the number of Iraqis killed is more than 10 times the
number of Americans who have lost their lives. Most
don’t know or haven’t thought about how many children
could have obtained health insurance or how many
elementary school teachers could have been hired with
the $151 billion spent on the war so far. Most don’t
know the enormous financial burden shouldered by the
majority of U.S. military families. Most are barely
aware of the legion of other costseconomic, human,
environmental and moreborn by millions of people in
Iraq and around the world.

We hope that you find this report useful in your work
to stimulate broad debate about the costs and
legitimacy of the war and occupation in Iraq.
