I'm reading the Pierpont Society's genealogical notes on their family's British ancestry [
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/rs/rak/gen/pier/piergen.htm] and it seems the Beecher-Stow(e)s are also relatives of the Pierponts -- part of the "extended family" of S&B!  So, THREE members of the "family" generated the same propaganda?!?!

More interesting still, the British ancestry of the Pierponts (incl. JP Morgan) in the notes cited above leads back to the Cavendish and Bentinck lines (Royal Society physiocrats) --with a Percy/Pierce thrown in-- and therefore (remembering my own incomplete research) relates them to the CECIL family ...  I wonder, did the Cecils have a genealogy of their American cousins in hand when choosing JP Morgan?

--- Begin Message --- -Caveat Lector- Some oddities to consider:

(1) Eli Whitney Jr (industrialist, merchant, and arms dealer) and Samuel FB Morse (inventor) were cousins on their mother's side.  Thanks to his marriage to the great granddaughter of Yale founder James Pierpont, Eli Whitney's brothers-in-law were Yale president Timothy Dwight and Aaron Burr Sr, father of the traitor (and a Parsons, related to Theophilus Parsons?)  Since James Pierpont's daughter married William Russell, that makes him part of the extended Skul & Bones "family tree" (which included JP Morgan, married to another Pierpont gal).

(2) Whitney's cousins the Morses are interesting cases: elder Jedidiah Morse (Yale graduate 1783) was a polymath like Ben Franklin type, educated in Edinburgh, but also seems to have been a vocal propagandist against the so-called "Illuminati plot" in America -- and Jed's son Samuel FB Morse (Yale grad), the inventive genius, toward the end of his life wrote of a Catholic/Habsburg/Jesuit (Mason) conspiracy -- both of these contributing mightily to the anti-Masonic hysteria of the 1830s (when Skull & Bones was formalized) and a demagoguery manipulated by the politicians, whose sentiments continued to resonate in the secessionism of the Confederacy.

(3) Now, note the interwoven themes here: The "pirate-Templar" S&B, through the Russells, involved historically in both the slave trade, pimping the South, and dope trade, allied with their British counterparts; "family" man Burr's conspiracy to take control of Louisiana and border Southern states, controlled by Catholic Spain, and create an independent nation; Russell cousin/heir JP Morgan's association with the Rothschilds; Rothschild interest in America evident from the dispatch of August Belmont in the 1830s, during the "anti-Masonic panic" and depression in the US ...

"The Rothschilds financed the North through emissaries August Belmont, Jay Cooke (commissioned to sell bond issues, arranging with Belmont to sell Union bonds in Europe), J. and W. Seligman and Company, and Speyer & Co. Judah P. Benjamin (1811-84) of the law firm of Slidell, Benjamin and Conrad, in Louisiana, was a Rothschild agent, who became Secretary of State for the Confederacy in 1862. His law partner, John Slidell (August Belmontâs wifeâs uncle) was the Confederate envoy to France.  Slidellâs daughter was married to Baron Frederick DÂErlanger, in Frankfurt, related to the Rothschilds, and acted on their behalf. Slidell was the representative of the South who borrowed money from the DÂErlangers to finance the Confederacy."

... Two spokesmen for the Skull & Bones loudly propagandizing against "secret societies," later primarily the Catholic Hapsburgs, singling out Metternich's post-"Congress of Vienna" machine ("Jesuit Freemasonry") as responsible for international conspiracy against "democracy."  And just coincidentally, these just happen to be BRITAIN's arch-enemies, and GERMANY's as well.  (Despite the link between the British Rothschilds [with a London-Frankfurt axis], JP Morgan and the eventual Rhodes "Society of the Elect," the Rothschild family itself seems to have had a finger in every pie, bankrolling all sides, although the Catholicism of the "Holy Alliance" would certainly be distasteful to them.)  ... The "Illuminati scare" of the 1790s --essentially aimed at "purifying" Masonry of left-wing elements, with the main target being the radical democrat Jefferson (a NON-Mason!) and therefore beneficial to reactionaries-- resurrected in slightly altered form to rally the mindless mob against alleged foreign CATHOLIC interests and JESUIT Masons -- pointing fingers at the Deep South as "aristocratic," un-democratic (from owning slaves), and imbued with an Illuminati-ish mysticism reflected in Pike's Freemasonry and the Ku Klux Klan, the whole region in danger of allying with Catholic Bourbon-Habsburg Spain.  (Note the blaming of Lincoln's assassination on, again, a CATHOLIC conspiracy.)  Useful in helping overthrow the plantation economy in favor of the capitalist factory system ...

There's an underlying thread here --of a "grand plan," of sleight-of-hand propaganda, of a foreign alliance camouflaged by a "Red Scare" involving the ally's archenemy-- that I'm only beginning to intuit while trying to grasp 19th Century US history.  Seems to go all the way back to the Loyalists vs the "patriots" and onward into the period of the Federalists, Hamilton vs Jefferson, but that's where it gets kinda vague for me.

Maybe I'm wrong, because group-loyalties can shift suddenly, a la the swing from  Right to Left in the Roosevelt era and then dramatically back again after WWII.
But the question bugging me is "Cui bono?"-- Why would a palpably Masonic group like S&B generate ANTI-Masonic propaganda, not once but TWICE, during BOTH the "Illuminati" scare and Anti-Masonic panic (contemporary with the founding of S&B/Russell Trust) just before the Civil War (which resulted in a national economy favorable to oligarchs allied w/ England)?

Anyway, see snippets below:

"In May 1798, a prominent minister in Boston <and graduate of Yale 1783>, Rev. Jedidiah Morse, delivered a timely sermon of great import to the young country, which was then sharply divided between Jeffersonians and Federalists, Francophiles and Anglophiles.  After reading Robison [and Barruel], Morse was convinced that the United States too was the victim of a Jacobinical plot touched off by Illuminism, and that the country should be rallied to defend itself against the machinations of the international conspiracy. His warnings were heeded throughout New England wherever Federalists brooded about the rising tide Jeffersonian democracy.  Timothy Dwight, the president of Yale, followed Morse's sermon with a Fourth of July discourse, "The Duty of Americans," in which he held forth against the Antichrist in his own glowing rhetoric: "Shall we introduce [these doctrines] into our government, our schools, our families? Shall our sons become the disciples of Voltaire, and the dragoons of Marat; or our daughters the concubines of the Illuminati?"

"
Soon the pulpits of New England were ringing with denunciations of the Illuminati, as though the country were swarming with them. The prevalence of these denunciations is more intelligible if one remembers that the United States did have, if not any Illuminati, a few Democratic-Republican societies which were widely believed to be Jacobinical and to have instigated the Whiskey Rebellion.

"The anti-Masonic movement of the late 1820's and 1830's took up and extended the obsession with conspiracy. At first blush, this movement may seem to be no more than an extension or repetition of the anti-Masonic theme sounded in the earlier outcry against the Bavarian Illuminati -- and, indeed, the works of writers like Robison and Barruel were often cited again as evidence of the sinister character of Masonry.  But whereas the panic of the 1790's was confined mainly to New England and linked to an ultra-conservative argument, the later anti-Masonic movement affected many parts of the northern United States and was altogether [more "populist",] congenial to democracy and egalitarianism.

Although anti-Masonry happened to be anti-Jacksonian (Jackson was a Mason), it showed the same fear that opportunities for the common man would be closed which one finds in Jackson's crusade against the Bank of the United States ...  [However], the anti-Masonic movement ... soon fell victim to the changing fortunes of party politics. It was joined and used by a great many men who did not share its original anti-Masonic feelings ...

"[Samuel FB Morse's] book "Foreign Conspiracy against the Liberties of the United States" (1835) follows the logic of Frederick Schlegel of Austria who declared that monarchy and Catholicism are inseparable. His book states: 'The author undertakes to show that a conspiracy against the liberties of this Republic is now in full action, under the direction of the wily Prince Metternich of Austria, who, knowing the impossibility of obliterating this troublesome example of a great and free nation by force of arms, is attempting to accomplish his object through the agency of an army of Jesuits. ... Austria is now acting in this country. She has devised a grand scheme. She has organized a great plan for doing something here.... She has her Jesuit missionaries travelling through the land; she has supplied them with money, and has furnished a fountain for a regular supply ... This array of facts and arguments going to prove the existence of such a conspiracy, will astonish any man who opens book with the same incredulity as we did."'
Were the plot successful, Morse said, it would not be long before some scion of the House of Habsburg would exert Imperial control over the United States. Catholics, working 'with the minds and the funds of all despotic Europe,' were the channel of this influence.

Lyman Beecher, elder of a famous family and the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote in [1835] his Plea for the West ... Everything depended, in his judgment, upon what influences dominated the great West, where the future of the country lay. There [fundamentalist] Protestantism was engaged in a life-or-death struggle with Catholicism. "A great tide of immigration, hostile to free institutions, was sweeping in upon the country, subsidized by the potentates of Europe, multiplying tumult and violence ..." According to Beecher, Metternich knew that there would be a party in the United States willing 'sell their country into an everlasting bondage.' Even so much as a tenth of the voting population, 'condensed and wielded by the Catholic powers of Europe, might decide our elections, perplex our policy, inflame and divide the nation, break the bond of our union, and throw down our free institutions.'

A further aspect of anti-Masonry that is at once arresting and puzzling to the modern mind is its obsession with the character of Masonic oaths ... At the first national anti-Masonic convention a committee spent a great deal of time demonstrating that such oaths were subversive .... Many anti-Masons were particularly fascinated by the penalties invoked if Masons failed to live up to their obligations, and these penalties were ingeniously and bloodily imagined ... The oath attributed to a royal arch mason invited 'having my skull smote off.' The sanguinary character of Masonry was shown by the ritual of the lodges, which required drinking wine from human skulls ..."
