-Caveat Lector-

Kris,
I'm not sure you run the list below, but please forward this message to whomever does. This info is not for publishing but as background.

There is a link between the first and fourth stories.

Inre the first story, I did a story in 2002 going back to that document and seeing what dioceses followed it and which ones didn't. Given the avalanche of lawsuits of the past few years, it was interesting to see which ones were filed in dioceses that didn't follow the guidelines (remove priests, send them for treatment and give them desk jobs afterward) and those that did. Nearly all the complaints were brought in dioceses that didn't follow. A few were brought on old cases --- 10 years or older --- that had been settled earlier. There were a lot of quiet settlements in the period following the 1986 document up to the early 1990s. Also, as with nearly everything else, the clergy sex abuse crisis became a tool to rid the Church of liberal bishops, and many were accused just to weaken their voices.
The exonerations, of course, receive little or no coverage.
In the case of Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany, NY, whom I covered extensively, the accusations were groundless, as were all the filings made in that dioceses by attorney John Aretakis. The complaints weren't even fully filled out, no money was paid to actually put them on the docket, yet the Albany Times Union gave credence to each and every one of them, even the ones that were repeats or where the so-called victims stated that Aretakis didn't represent them or that they had no issue. At the time, I worked for the Troy Record and filed hundreds of stories on the burgeoning crisis, as well as covering all the players, the changes in church ministry, interviewing experts on clergy sex issues, etc. etc. etc. The Wanderer (published in Minnesota), which was sending out Aretakis info like a high speed publicity agent, started writing trash about me, because I was doing the footwork. Clearly, there was and still is an agenda coming from the denizens in whatever hellhole they meet to destroy the Church's voice, particularly on the issue of peace. (Bishops voted again this week to withdraw from Iraq.) Link to fourth story: Apparently, in late 2001, early 2002, Elie Weasel and Edgar Bronfman approached JP2 for Nazi payback, and JP2 said no (shoot me again not not), he wouldn't budge. Bronfman threatened him with "the biggest scandal to ever hit the Catholic Church." Two weeks later, every major newspaper and the wires all had reams of information on priests in their locales. I know. I got it and marvelled at the research and distribution job that was done. It was as organized as any political campaign, which it was and still is.

Cover story - What they knew in 1985 - 17 years ago, a report on clergy sex abuse warned U.S. bishops of trouble ahead By Thomas C. Fox "As attorneys across the nation press countless clergy sex abuse cases against the church, two critical questions they most often ask are: "What did the bishop know?" and "When did he know it?" At stake is episcopal culpability. Also at stake in thousands of lawsuits, many filed and many others still being planned, is potentially billions of dollars in payments to victims. In light of these developments, a 92-page report on clergy sex abuse, distributed to the U.S. bishops in May 1985, warning them of the trouble ahead, has been repeatedly cited by victims' attorneys as a hard measure of episcopal negligence. The document, reportedly referred to in more than 100 lawsuits, is well known to the bishops." "At the time the men finished the final draft of the report in June 1985, they noted, more than $100 million in claims had been made against just one diocese as a result of sexual contact between a priest "and a number of minor children." The report said the settlement for seven cases, including fees and expenses, had exceeded $5 million, and that "the average settlement for each case was nearly $500,000." It estimated that "total projected losses for the decade" could rise to $1 billion." http://natcath.org/NCR_Online/archives2/2002b/051702/051702a.htm

Sex abuse inquiry set to begin in Cornwall 1/20/06 Cornwall, Ont. "A public inquiry into the handling of allegations of systemic child sexual abuse in this eastern Ontario city is slated to begin Feb. 13. The long-awaited investigation is expected to take much of the year and involve more than a dozen parties eager to get to the bottom of the case, said Peter Engelmann, lead counsel for the commission. He said the first phase of the two-part inquiry will look at how various institutions responded to claims that community leaders were involved in the alleged abuse of several young people in the 1990s." http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20060120/abuse_inquiry_060120/20060120?hub=TorontoHome

Ex-Priest Is Arrested in Abuse Case 1/20/06 Michael Baker, who told Cardinal Mahony in 1986 that he molested children but stayed in ministry, is seized as he leaves a plane at LAX. By Jean Guccione and Richard Winton, Times Staff Writers "A former priest allowed to remain in ministry after telling Cardinal Roger M. Mahony that he had molested children was arrested Thursday on suspicion of committing lewd acts with a child in the 1990s, with deputies taking him into custody as he disembarked from a plane at Los Angeles International Airport. The arrest caps a four-year effort by prosecutors to build a case against Michael Stephen Baker, who authorities said ranks among the most prolific alleged abusers in the church. More than 20 people told the Los Angeles Archdiocese that Baker had molested them during his 26 years as a priest." http://www.latimes.com/news/local/state/la-me-baker20jan20,0,7334375.story?coll=la-news-state

Supreme Court Won't Dismiss Holocaust Case Against Vatican Bank - AP 1/18/06 "The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to consider blocking lawsuits brought on behalf of thousands of gypsies, Jews, Serbs and others who claim the Vatican Bank received valuables stolen by Nazi sympathizers during World War II. Lawyers for the Vatican Bank, which is the financial arm of the Roman Catholic Church, had argued that American courts should not deal with the claims." http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1137492311998 www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
