James, age thirty, is a Negro slave living in Hanover County, Virginia and has joined in a petition by his master, Robert Wortham, for Elian’s return to Hanover County. In his court petition Wortham asserts that six-year old Elian had been taken from the Wortham farm in Hanover County by his mother, Charlotte, a Negro woman also belonging to Wortham. Charlotte, a runaway slave under the law, then made her way north with the boy until she arrived in Maryland where she unfortunately died of exposure and exhaustion. James asserts that he wants to raise his son as a father should, that he misses his son’s company and laughter. James and Wortham both accuse the boy’s Philadelphia relatives of maliciously and illegally detaining Elian. Wortham asserts that if Elian is returned to his home, Elian will be well cared for on the Wortham farm. So, do you send the boy back?” - An analogy for people who think Cuban refugee Elian Gonzalez should be sent back to “master” Castro, reprinted in “Asides,” Wall Street Journal, 1/10/00 ************************************** Sending Brazile Packing With Vice President Al Gore refusing to apologize for his campaign manager’s racial broadsides, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee has an alternative suggestion: send Gore’s loose cannon aide to the same shrinks treating Atlanta Braves relief pitcher John Rocker for HIS racially-charged outbursts. “Al Gore won’t fire Donna Brazile for saying that Gen. Colin Powell would rather have his picture taken with black children than feed them, and this morning, he refused even to apologize for her crude, hateful remarks,” said RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson. Nicholson said Al Gore ought to be “Alpha Male” enough to apologize for her brutal words and send her packing. - Source: RNC news release, 1/10/00 ************************************************** GOP Winning War of Donations “The three most important words in the English language are: ‘I Love You.’ Except in a Presidential election year when the three most important words in the English language are: ‘Cash On Hand.’ Bradley has it. Gore doesn't. The Republican National Committee has it. The Democratic National Committee doesn't. ... Senator Bradley's strong edge in Cash On Hand means trouble for Vice President Gore - probably not enough to deny him the nomination, but almost certainly enough to deny him the Presidency. ... The DNC has under $2.5 million Cash On Hand. The RNC's fund raising operation - under the direction of Mel Sembler - has over ten. ... What we are talking about, by the way, is that awful soft money that we all hear so much about which goes to activities destructive to our way of life such as phone banks, walk lists, get-out-the-vote efforts, candidate training, and voter education programs.” - Rich Galen, “Mullings,” 1/10/00 ************************************************** Keyes Moving Up Steadily “Not too long ago political pros didn't take Alan Keyes' presidential bid seriously. But as the new millennium dawns, it may be a whole new ball game for the GOP White House long-shot. Stellar performances in recent debates have Keyes' fourth-quarter fund-raising numbers up by 75 percent over the previous three months. And, more importantly, for the first time ever a major scientific poll places the black conservative in the top tier of GOP presidential hopefuls. Zogby International, the only polling outfit to call the 1996 presidential race on the nose, now has Keyes garnering six percent support nationally; still firmly in single-digit territory but ahead of magazine publisher Steve Forbes, Sen. Orrin Hatch and former Reagan aide Gary Bauer. At 55 percent, George W. Bush has a comfortable lead in the latest Zogby match-up. But Sen. John McCain, who's benefited from months of glowing press coverage, is at a mere 12 percent -- just six points ahead of Keyes.” - NewsMax.com, 1/6/00 ***************************************************** What’s Wrong With This Picture? “One uncertainty in Election 2000 is how vigorously (Nevada GOP Gov. Kenny) Guinn will work to help Republicans win legislative seats. Because Guinn worked well with Assembly Democrats to get his programs passed (last year), there is speculation he won’t put too much energy into trying to weaken them for election purposes, especially because he may need Democrats to raise taxes in 2001.” - Las Vegas Review Journal, 1/9/00 *********************************************** Help Spread the Word If you know someone who does not receive our FREE GOP News & Views briefings, send their e-mail address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Published by: Nevada Republican Liberty Caucus “The Conscience of the Republican Party” Chuck Muth, Chairman **COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
