-Caveat Lector- WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a prelude to war! ****************************************** Debate Update The GOP presidential candidates debated on back-to-back nights this week. And the biggest losers were: the press. Tim Russert’s attempt to inject himself into the GOP debate in New Hampshire on Thursday was way out of line, and it took Alan Keyes to stand up and put a stop to it. At the South Carolina debate on Friday, a local reporter tried to get the GOP candidates to publicly admit their “biggest personal mistake” - an obvious “gotcha” set-up question that was booed vigorously by the audience in attendance. And once again, it was Alan Keyes who put the reporter in her place. At the same debate, MSNBC reporter Brian Williams tried to drag George Bush into a local dispute involving the Confederate flag - again to a chorus of boo’s from the audience. Bush refused to take the bait. As for the players themselves: Hatch and Bauer are toast - though at least Hatch has an appreciable sense of humor and real record of achievement. Keyes, still mired in single digits, is nonetheless the most exciting and articulate candidate in the race, and the entire country - not to mention the other candidates - benefit every time he speaks, even when you don’t agree with him. For that reason, we hope he stays in the race. Forbes, as much as we love his conservative credentials, just ain’t doing anything to break out of the pack. Only a political “Hail Mary” can save him now. McCain’s honeymoon is over, and his holier-than-thou, johnny-one-note obsession with the Republican-killing campaign finance reform disaster is finally coming back and biting him in the ass. And his Clintonesque attacks on the Bush tax-cut plan are backfiring on him big time with the GOP base, as well. McCain peaked about two weeks ago. This week was the beginning of the end for his campaign. The fat lady might not be singing, but she’s certainly clearing her throat. Heck, McCain might not even win New Hampshire after all. Finally, as critical as we’ve been of George Bush in the past, we have to admit that he’s been getting stronger and stronger in every debate. His mediocre performance in the earlier debates apparently scared the crap out of his campaign - and they’ve finally taken “Air Dubya” off auto-pilot and are in the trenches fighting for the nomination. This is making him a better candidate ... and thanks to Alan Keyes and Steve Forbes and Orrin Hatch, a better Republican. ***************************************** “Fred” vs. the Pilgrims Yesterday, we shared with you the outrageous comment by one of our (rare) IQ-challenged readers, “Fred”, who said of the Elian Gonzalez matter: “(I)f people are so damned concerned about his (Elian’s) safety, why aren't they attacking his now dead mother for putting him on a cobbled together raft and risking his life in the ocean?“ In response, another of our more human readers noted: “It sounds like ‘Fred’ would have criticized the Pilgrims for risking their lives on a very small ship to come to America!” Touche. ***************************************************** Left-Wing Hypocrites (Oxymoron?) “What frosts MY (deleted) about the Gonzalez thing is all these freakin' Democrats on their soap boxes screaming about how children belong with their parents. Is that why they've put the heaviest peace-time tax burden on families so that mom now almost HAS go turn the kids over to a ‘gummint’ school and a day care center? ... Give me a friggin' break. If I sound pissed, it's only because I am!” - GOP News & Views reader, 1/7/00 ********************************************************** Freedom Fighter Dissed by Left “In years past, Elian Gonzalez’s mother would have been honored for giving her life so her son could grow up in freedom. How disgusting the attitude that so many leftists have of her today.” - GOP News & Views reader, 1/7/00 ************************************ A Mother’s Love “As a mother, I understand the depths to which a mother would go to pursue a better future for her child. If I were a Jewish mother in Nazi Germany, I would have done anything I could to get my child out of imminent danger, and would have pushed him on to a place where he would have a bright future. Elian's mother wanted a better life for herself and her son. Just because Americans don't identify Castro with concentration camps, we think that Elian should be sent back to ‘harmless’ Communist Cuba.” - Fran Eaton, GOPN&V reader, 1/7/00 ************************************************************* “Youngest Refugee” Deserves Day in Court “Al Gore, phone home - and tell Bill Clinton to reverse the INS decision to deport Elian Gonzalez. Give him what we’d give anybody accused of the vilest crime: a day in a fair court on free soil. The INS has no business deciding child custody cases, and Al Gore ought to have the guts to say so. We won’t know what Elian’s father REALLY wants until he and his loved ones are free from the clutches of Fidel Castro’s hired goons and paid demonstrators.” - RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson, 1/7/00 *********************************************************** WWRRD? Closing thought. In thinking about the fate of little Elian, I can't help but ask: "What Would Ronald Reagan Do." And you know what? I can't, in my wildest imagination, knowing how precious and dear the Gipper held freedom and liberty, envision him sending this little boy back to the clutches of the forces of evil without his father first coming to America and getting a taste of freedom before making his decision. God, how I miss having a REAL American president in the White House. ************************************************************* Help Spread the Word If you know someone who does not receive our FREE GOP News & Views briefings, send their e-mail address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Published by: Nevada Republican Liberty Caucus “The Conscience of the Republican Party” Chuck Muth, Chairman **COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
