WHAT DO ALL THOSE GENES DO?
Triumphant from their decoding of complete genetic blueprints of
living organisms, scientists are now intent on an even more daunting
task - finding out what all those newly revealed genes do and how what
they do can be put to good use. The researchers are prying into closely
guarded secrets of inheritance in work they hope will have major
implications for the well-being of humankind. "Virtually every disease
is a failure of some protein," said David Eisenberg, director of the
University of California, Los Angeles, and Department of Energy
Laboratory of Structural Biology and Molecular Medicine, UCLA professor
of chemistry and biochemistry and co-author of one of two related papers
reported in the British journal Nature. "Ultimately, we believe this
research will mean the diagnosis and treatment of virtually all disease.
" The teams are looking beyond the DNA sequence of a genome - the
complete genetic blueprint of an organism - to the unknown properties of
the proteins they are discovering.

SCENT IS IN THE NOSTRIL OF THE NOSE
To each nostril, the world smells different, scientists say. "Our
findings indicate that with each sniff, each nostril conveys to the
brain a slightly different olfactory image - simultaneously," lead
researcher Noam Sobel of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. The
variation can be attributed to air flows that vary on each side of the
nose, the scientists explained. The research could have significant
impact on the way artificial olfactory devices are developed, they
reported in the British journal Nature. "The major significance of this
finding is in revealing a mechanism that increases olfactory acuity by
increasing olfactory range," Sobel said. "This mechanism whereby
different air-flow rates contribute to tuning of the olfactory system to
specific odorants may be applied in artificial olfactory apparati such
as an artificial nose."

NEW HIGH GLOBAL TEMPERATURES FORECAST
Global temperatures will rise far higher than previously predicted,
British researchers said. In a report by the Times of London, The
British Meteorological Office says the claim was based on what
researchers said would be a huge surge in carbon dioxide levels in the
middle of the next century. Unless carbon dioxide emissions are cut,
researchers said, the land will be six degrees hotter than the predicted
41 degrees (5.5 C), and the increased ground temperature will cause soil
to release previously trapped carbon dioxide. The scientists said the
higher carbon dioxide would further global warming and increase
droughts, hurricanes, food shortages and raise sea levels. Dr. Geoff
Jenkins, head of climate prediction at the Meteorological Office,
uncovered the findings using new and more sensitive computer models.
