[Somehow, I really think that Clinton would approve of this
fundraiser. In fact, I wonder if he had a hand in it. And, he
could always make a "surprise" appearance. Maybe being driven to
the event while hiding under a blanket.]

Gore counts the cost of 'bunny money' party

FROM IAN BRODIE IN WASHINGTON

AL GORE was urged yesterday to cancel a Democratic fundraising
party at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles that is
seen as an affront to women, Roman Catholics and Hispanics.

Mr Gore, the Vice-President and the Democrats' White House
choice, has already criticised the party and will not attend, but
the propriety of raising a hoped-for $3 million (£2 million) in
so-called "bunny money" continues to dog him, along with
questions about other Playboy donations to the Democrats.

The party is planned for August 15, the second day of the
Democrats' nominating convention in Los Angeles and also the
Feast of the Assumption, a Catholic holy day that commemorates
the taking of Mary into heaven. "To hold an event on this date
at a place that celebrates the denigration of women is
particularly offensive to Catholics," William Donohue, president
of the Catholic League, said in an open letter to Mr Gore.

The fundraiser is for a political action committee called
Hispanic Unity, but, Mr Donohue said, since most Hispanics are
Catholic, the Playboy gathering was sending a doubly offensive
message.

Although Mr Gore has objected to the venue, he has stopped short
of calling for cancellation of the party. It is being organised
by Loretta Sanchez, a congresswoman from California who was
chosen by Mr Gore to be vice-chairman of the Democratic National
Committee.

Mr Gore's spokesman, Chris Lehane, said: "We're not attending,
participating, supporting, condoning or giving our imprimatur in
any shape, way or form."

Maybe not, but in the past five years Mr Gore has taken $8,500
from Mr Hefner and his daughter, Christie Hefner, who is the
chief executive of Playboy Enterprises, and the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee has received $26,000 from Mr
Hefner in the past four years.
