-Caveat Lector-

Anyone who believes all that stuff about what a great job as gov, George W.
Bush is doing needs to read, "The Man in the Empty Blue Suit" in the Jan
24,2000 issue of THE NATION. It's written by RobertSherrill. Just a couple
of short quotes:

"If Bush gets into the White House and Republicans continue to control
Congress, they'll achieve what they want, which is the demollition of the
civil justice system."

*****

"Bush's top promise while campaigning for his first term was that he would
put a heavy lid on punitive damages and hogtie plaintiffs' attorneys. And he
did. It was his first order of business after being sworn in. He designed
his tort reform package as and "emergency," so it zipped through the
legislature."

*****

"Bush's service to the tort reform gang was gratefully acknowledged. Ralph
Wayne, president of the Texas Civil Justice League, a big anticonsumer lobby
that gave generously to Bush's campaigns, said the pro-industry changes in
tort law "would nver have happened without George Bush. He kept his word far
and beyond."

*****

But I like the statistics onpage 20.

Texas is fiftieth in spending for teachers' salaries (counting benefits),
forty-ninth in spending for the environment, forty-sixth for police
protection, forty-fifth for public libraries, fortieth for natural resorces,
thirty-second for higher education. But it's right up there for some things.
No. l in air and water pollution and No. l in prisoners executed since l976.
Texas ranks ninth in what it spends on its prisons, but forty-first, per
capita, in what it spends on kindergarten through twelfth grade. Oh well,
what a chance we have. Just imagine--the Rehnquist Court, a Republican
Congress and George W. well advised by his daddy. Now there's a future.
