Gunman Wounds Five in Pittsburgh Suburb

Updated 1:58 PM ET March 1, 2000

WILKINSBURG, Pa. (Reuters) - A gunman wounded up to five people in a
Pittsburgh suburb on Wednesday, police said, the day
after a 6-year-old boy shot and killed a classmate in an incident that
stunned America.

Television networks reported the gunman was holed up in a nearby
building and could be holding five hostages.

"We do have four of the victims. They are all listed in critical
condition right now," an official at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center told CNN television. A fifth person was also in critical
condition at another hospital.

Pittsburgh police said the gunman shot three people in a McDonald's
restaurant in Wilkinsburg, then went to a Burger King next door
and shot one more person. It was not clear where the fifth person was shot.

A woman who lived nearby told CNN an armed man walked into her apartment
before the shooting took place and told her: "I'll be dead
   in ten minutes."

"He said, 'Well, I'm not gonna hurt any black people, I'm gonna kill all
white people,"' she said. He then left the apartment, she added.

Police said there were SWAT teams and negotiators in the area where
buildings were being evacuated.

It was not clear what provoked the attack and details of the incident
were sketchy.

An FBI agent told CNN: "Right now it's a rapidly evolving situation. We
have personnel on the scene from a number of agencies."

The incident was the latest in a string of shootings to jolt the United
States.

The killing of the 6-year-old at an elementary school in Michigan on
Tuesday prompted President Clinton to appeal to the American
electorate to make tighter gun control laws an issue of the 2000
presidential election.

Vice President Al Gore, declaring "enough is enough," cited the death of
the first grader in blasting the pro-gun lobby for blocking
enactment of "common sense" gun controls.

"It is time to get guns out of the hands of those who should not have
them -- the criminals, the students, the children," Gore said as he
campaigned in California, which holds its presidential primary next
Tuesday.
