------------------------------------------------------------------------
ORIGINALLY FROM SHERI NAKKEN SITE

Many of us have been very concerned and trying to research thisissue...
Finally someone compiled a list....
http://www.justpeace.org/explosions.htm

FACTORY, GENERATING PLANT, PIPELINE
EXPLOSIONS AND FIRES

Summary -
1990 - 3 reports
1991 - 1 report
1992 - 1 report
1993 - 1 report
1994 - 1 report
1995 - 2 reports
1996 - 6 reports
1997 - 5 reports
1998 - 29 reports
1999 - 90 reports
2000 - As of TODAY there have been 64 reports since 1/1/2000!!!!!!
See below for listing of EVERY report....

Pre 1998 ... 1998 ... 1999

I first started thinking about electrical generating plant explosions
when one blew up in my neighborhood in February 1999. Well, it wasn't
right in the neighborhood, but close by. I was involved with an urban
ministry that took trucks out three nights a week to visit homeless
people who were not living in shelters. There were two groups of
homeless people living in pallet houses in the large open fields that
surrounded this plant (which was about 3 miles from the neighborhood
in which I lived). I drove by it every week on our delivery route.
Late one night, the windows rattled and there was a loud boom of an
explosion destroying 15% of the generating capacity of Kansas City
Power and Light. I moved out of Kansas City in April, so I don't know
if they've been experiencing summer blackouts as a result.

More recently, this subject came up as a discussion thread on the Time
Bomb/Yourdon list and I started exchanging some private email with
others about this. There seems to be a feeling that beginning with the
fall of 1998, there has been an increase in such incidents. So I have
started doing web searches of newspaper archives, others have
contributed information in the thread found on government and industry
publication sites, and I have received some private email. Below is
the list as of July 21, 1998. I have some info on 1998 explosions that
I haven't sorted through yet to add to the list.

What does this mean? Too early to tell, but what I'm concerned about
is the possibility that this is the "leading edge" of year 2000
disruptions degrading the infrasructure. Explosions and fires can
happen at any time, and for many different reasons, and I am not
saying that all of the events listed below are y2k related. So
research will continue, and others may be doing some math/probability
calculations on them. This page will be updated as new information
comes available.

Most of the ones I have found have some info about my source and any
info I had about the effects or whys of the event. The others were
taken from lists compiled and posted in the time bomb 2000 forum.

Here's a link to my table of Petroleum Industry Problems
http://www.nckodokan.com/charts/crude.html

Unfortunately, Glitch Central has my list categorized as "Nuclear Plant
Outages" which it isn't. I wrote to their web master and asked him to correct
it, but 12 hours later no correction has been made.

Totally outstanding job!

I have been hoping someone would do this to see if there is a real
correlation between date/time and the current oil crisis. This studdy
definately shows a trend. If by chance this trend has a symetric
beginning-peak and peak-ending, then we are certainly in for an extended
period of oil related problems, expecially since a peak in the problems is
not yet apparent.

Reply Reporting Rules

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meg,

Nice summary. Quick question: Have the reporting rules changed any during
this time frame (1990-1997 show single digits, 1998-1999 show a vast
increase). What I'm wondering is that perhaps there has been a change in how
incidents are reported, which could change the numbers of incidents being
reported. I actually hope this is the case, but somehow I doubt it.

Reply I've worked at power plants since the 70's.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know how many plants there are in the US but it is a large number.
I'm sure there are a lot more instances than have been listed.

Because of the rotational speed of the generator, water can not be used for
cooling because the added mass of the water would destroy the rotor. Instead
hydrogen gas is commonly used. It's not unknown for a hydrogen leak to result
in an explosion. It's not Y2K related.

Transformers as well, especially the large ones, require a cooling medium. An
oil is used that when an internal fault occurs causes an explosion and fire.
Large "main" transformers at power plants are surrounded by a fire
suppression system. Again there's no Y2K effect here simply a potentially
hazardous situation that's addressed by safety measures.

At this point, I doubt that the evidence definitely points to emerging Y2K
problems simply because I doubt that the compilation is anywhere near
complete based on my knowledge of actual events.

Reply Let's divide up the remaining work.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Marcia,

I saw your site with the incident table when I logged on to the net late last
night and was impressed with the work you have done so far. Today, I am
getting an access denied message when I try logging on again. Your email
address was on the site, and I had planned on sending you a message about the
data table. Since I didn't copy your address, I'll have to post it here in
public.

I have started compiling a similar table of incidents. My list however is
restricted to refinery outages and to reports on the Bloomberg database. I
chose these restrictions in order to try to maintain the best possible
consistency across time. The objections that other posters have raised about
the validity of the conclusion drawn so far are valid. We don't know if the
increase in recent accidents in our tables is because there are more
accidents or because we are better able to find recent accident reports. That
is why I felt that sticking to one database that keeps its historical files
(forever?) would be a more valid approach. The Bloomberg data on a dedicated
Bloomberg terminal goes back to September of 1997, so that should be enough
time to determine if anomalies are now taking place. The drawback with using
the Bloomberg terminal is that it is a dedicated system, so I can only
handwrite the data and later enter it into a spreadsheet. It takes me about
one hour for every month, and so far I have only worked backwards from the
present to September '99. Tough sledding.

What I would like to do, if you are still building up the table, is divide
the remaining months between us and anyone else who is able to assist so that
we are not duplicating each other's work. If this interests you, please send
me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your phone number. I can then call you on
Tuesday so that we can agree on what data elements to collect and which
months each of us should tackle.

I look forward to hearing from you.
