CHENEY'S ROLE
In his farewell address to the nation in 1961, President Dwight
Eisenhower warned about the dangers of the military industrial
complex. Eisenhower's warning should have been a wake up call, but America
continued on her complacent path. With the end of the cold war, needs for
military equipment should have dwindled, but it didn't happen that
way. The arms manufacturers just shifted gears and began to redouble their
lobbying efforts. There was still plenty of trouble in the world, and they
used every means possible to make sure that the U.S. was involved. The
money many of the corporations began to make in the drug trade gave them
even greater access to the government, thus exacerbating the problem. The
deepest (and most easily tapped) pocket belonged to Uncle Sam. You just
had to know the right people.
Dick Cheney, our newly elected Vice President, belongs to that
group of people. He was Bush Senior's defense secretary and commanded the
Pentagon during the Persian Gulf War. There he controlled the allocation
of billions in government contract money, and he built relationships,
especially with those who control oil resources (domestic and foreign),
that have helped to put him where he is now. That is the way the game is
played. You make sure the "right people" get government favors, and then
when you need campaign money it is there. This guarantees that you will
keep on giving favors to those people who furnished financial support when
you needed it the most. In simple language, "You scratch my back, and I'll
scratch yours."
If we put aside all the speeches, press releases, and other spin
doctor products, we get to the essence of the Cheney philosophy, because
nothing tells more about a man than what he has actually done in the
past. Cheney served as CEO of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000. To
understand Cheney we need to understand Halliburton and their famous
subsidiary, heavy construction and oil giant, Brown and Root. Once source
says, (listed below) " A deeper look into history reveals that Brown and
Root's past as well as the past of Dick Cheney himself, connect to the
international drug trade on more than one occasion and in more than one
way." It is on the record that Cheney supported Oliver North's bid for the
U.S. Senate, even though North had been engaged in the "arms for drugs"
deals in the Bush Administration. Any reasonably diligent researcher can
find boatloads of information on Papa Bush's CIA drug dealings, from the
Iran Contra affair, the downing of Eugene Hassenfaus's airplane, to the San
Jose Mercury stories (Dark Alliance series) which were true, even though
they were later retracted (no doubt, under heavy pressure). Cheney is a
man with a history of four (now five) heart attacks; why did they choose
him? The answer is plain. Dick Cheney's record at Halliburton is a link
to the drug trade, and the Bush family felt that they could trust him. An
attorney for a major Russian oil company which has been connected to heroin
smuggling (and also a beneficiary of US backed loans for Brown and Root
contracts in Russia) held a 2.2 million fund raiser for Bush-Cheney. And
Dick Cheney, as Halliburton's largest individual shareholder ($45.5
million), has a vested interest in seeing to it that Brown and Root's
successes continue. We know there will be no questions about heroin
smuggling and probably no questions about sales of embargoed oil machinery
to Saddam Hussein, but will anyone question Dick Cheney about his stock
holdings?
Some believe that relationships between key institutions, players
and the Bushes themselves suggest that under Bush Junior's administration
the Bush family and its allies may well be able to control the drug trade
all the way from Medellin to Moscow. Happy New Year!
