-Caveat Lector- <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"> </A> -Cui Bono?- MORE SOLAR STORMS TO COME An Australian scientist says that although the world survived February solar storm -- technically a "coronal mass ejection," or burst of high-energy particles -- it will not always be so lucky. Roger Clay, an Adelaide University physicist, says that the sun has just begun its "solar maximum," an active phase that comes every 11 years. The previous solar max disrupted the Canadian power grid, and "since the last solar max 11 years ago, we've got a lot more satellites and we depend a lot more on satellites." Many of the communications and GPS satellites in orbit around Earth are not "radiation hardened, and the particles going through them could change a zero to a one in their computer's memory, which could effectively disable the satellite." He adds that more and more countries are integrating their power grids, creating "huge loops of wire connected together."
