Increasingly unhappy behind bars, convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard
beseeched first lady Hillary Clinton for help. Now he's protesting transfer to
a "violent" prison wing.
Pollard has already served 15 years of a life sentence for slipping United
States naval secrets to Israel, in what has been described as one of the
largest compromises ever of U.S. security.
The American-born Pollard, who became a naturalized Israeli citizen, has been
lobbying lately for a release from imprisonment to an improved prison
lifestyle.
According to a World Tribune.com report:
Last week, President Clinton's wife, in the midst of her campaign for the
Senate from New York, took up Pollard's case with one of her critics, New York
State Assemblyman Dov Hikind.
That was immediately construed as an attempt on her part to advance her
candidacy within the New York Jewish community, where there is some strong, but
not universal, support for Pollard's release.
Over the weekend, Pollard accused officials in Israel of, in effect, selling
him out to his American jailers.
He wrote to Moshe Kochanovsky, the Israeli Defense Ministry official
responsible for looking out for Pollard's welfare, denouncing him for failing
to help.
"Rather than act on my behalf," Pollard wrote, "you collaborated with the
Americans, believed their lies and gave me false assurances that the transfer
(to a different prison wing) was not life-threatening.
"Since the government of Israel would not help, my wife and I were forced to
fight the prison transfer on our own."
That was an apparent reference to the appeal Pollard made to Hillary Clinton.
In another letter a few days earlier, Pollard blamed Israel for failing to
protest his confinement in what he termed a facility for the criminally insane.
There, Pollard said, he was detained in a cell three stories underground – "a
dungeon cell in solitary confinement where the extremes of temperature were
brutal, and the rats and mice feasted in the darkness."
Pollard's latest move is to appeal an impending transfer to what he described
as a "violent" wing of the U.S. prison that is now his home.
