-Caveat Lector- ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 25 Dec 1998 13:56:07 -0500 From: "John V. Wilmerding" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Introduction and Inquiry I am subscribing here at the behest of a casual friend, William D. 'Bill' Reynolds, from my home town, who has a concern I would like to bring to the list. Bill, age 67, is an acute allergy sufferer. He says the main allergens involved are triphospates (food additives), sugar, and newsprint. He takes antihistamines on a regular basis, especially nightly in order to be able to sleep, and uses topical cortisone -- he says he has done so for years. Bill traces the onset of his allergic reactions to a period immediately following an announcement by, or direct quote from, one Miles Copeland (perhaps the same person as the manager of Sting and his band, 'The Police') that appeared in Rolling Stone magazine in the late 1980s, to the effect that "the CIA has developed means to make anyone allergic to anything". Bill has a theory that his allergies were intentionally induced by a person or persons unknown who were in disagreement with certain aspects of -- or false assumptions about -- his academic and political activism. Bill's interests and areas of inquiry to this list: * At the recognized risk of appearing paranoid about his theories, Bill would like to know more about a category of pathogens or other substances that can cause allergies or heightened sensitivity -- decreased immunity -- leading to serious allergies or more frequent or exacerbated allergic reactions to common substances, including anaphylactic shock. Does anyone have any links to archives, research, or institutions working in this area? One possible referent, though not relevant in Bill's case, might be the research done on Agent Orange and other pathogens released in the Vietnam and Gulf wars, to which large numbers of US service people were exposed. * Bill would also like to know if anyone connected with this list is knowledgable about governmental covert operations -- domestic or foreign -- or any organized human experimentation with -- or applications of -- such substances. In this context, Bill mentions a former CIA agent and 'whistle-blower', Vincent Marchetti, who possibly may know something about this matter. I have no way of vouching for or against any of Bill's theories or imputations here. However, he does not have Internet access, and I thought it might be helpful if I could assist him in answering his questions. While Bill's theories seem very tenuous to me, they are lent some creedence by some very recent authoritative reports in the London Times regarding Israel's organized research into -- or development of -- pathogens (especially biological) that can be targeted at people of specific genetic makeup or ethnicity.
