In Tehran, chairman of the Higher Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Ayatollah Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim, said that confrontations continued on Monday in several Iraqi cities between the Iraqi security forces and the demonstrators. Eyewitnesses told AFP in telephone calls from Amman that at least 100 people were killed in disturbances that erupted between security forces and the demonstrators following the assassination of one of the prominent clergy Ayatollah Muhammad Sadeq al-Sader. The Higher Council of the Islamic Revolution said that a large number of Iraqi government forces were killed in the confrontations that took place in the Iraqi cities, whereas some 18 citizens were shot to death by the guns of the Iraqi security forces. In a statement released on Sunday, the council called upon Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid to take urgent measures that would ensure the safety of religious researchers and the holy shrine of al-Najaf. The statement proposed the dispatching of a fact-finding committee and called on the Iraqi government to permit international supervision of an investigation to arrest those who committed this crime and to punish the killers and officials who gave their orders to commit such crimes. The statements also called for imposing international monitoring on religious shrines which it said have been exposed to the danger of collective and mass destruction as well as to take appropriate measures to protect the Iraqi people against the mass killings. For its part, the Islamic Labor Organization in Iraq said in a statement that intensive tension prevails Iraq after the government assassinated Muhammad al-Sader and his two sons. The organization added that clashes and confrontations continue in several Iraqi cities between the Iraqis and the government's forces. Iraq denies Shiite disorder as a result of al-Sader's death Iraq, Politics, 2/23/99 Iraq has categorically denied that there is any disorder following the assassination of the prominent Shiite man of religion Muhammad Sadeq al-Sader and his two sons. An Iraqi official told ArabicNews.com that what is claimed by information bodies and hostile fronts against Iraq that there is disorder in a number of Iraqi governorates are fabricated statements and have nothing to do with truth. He added that anti-Iraqi organizations want to create a state of disarray in Iraq, will all the reporters to visit Nissan and Dicar cities in southern Iraq to learn about the situation in Iraq. The Shiite opposition said that clashes that erupted due to the assassination of al-Sader continued yesterday in southern and central Iraq, resulting in the death of hundreds. They added that the Iraqi armed forces are setting up to confront the clashes. Meanwhile, hundreds of Iraqis residing in Jordan began demonstrations that denounced the assassination of Muhammad Sadeq al-Sader and his two sons, Mustafa and Nafel in the Iraqi city of Najaf last Friday. The Iraqi demonstrators repeated slogans and expressions that lay the responsibility for al-Sader's assassination on the Iraqi authorities. Iraqi opposition sources told ArabicNews.com that 45 days ago al-Sader was summoned to the bureau of the Iraqi manager of public security Taher El-Tekriti, then he met with the head of intelligence. The sources stated that the security forces instructed al-Sader to be committed to certain conditions, and that these conditions are not to be overlooked. Assassination of Iraq's al-Sader cause protest demonstration in Damascus Syria, Politics, 2/23/99 The BBC reported on Monday that thousands of Iraqi Shiites held a demonstration in Damascus on Monday in protest of assassinating the Iraqi Shiite clergy Muhammad Sadeq al-Sader in the Iraqi city of al-Najaf. The radio added that the Syrian authorities permitted only the Iraqis to take part in the demonstration.
