: Saturday, June 24 5:29 PM SGT : Israel denies existence of draft accord with Palestinians : JERUSALEM, June 24 (AFP) - : Public Security Minister Shlomo Ben Ami, who has been leading the talks : with the Palestinians, denied Saturday the existence of a draft : agreement to serve as a basis : for an Israeli-US-Palestinian summit. : "This document doesn't exist," he told Israeli public radio. : The Yediot Aharonot newspaper reported Friday that Israel and the : Palestinians had agreed on a nonbinding document as the platform for a : three-way summit to wrap : up an outline of a final peace accord. : Ben Ami said, "We think, however, that the coming of US Secretary of : State Madeleine Albright to the Middle East this week will permit the : holding of the summit." : "Israel intends to reach a comprehensive agreement in order to put an : end to conflict while preserving its security interests and sovereignty : over its capital Jerusalem." : The agreement "will be submitted to the (Israeli) people for approval." : He said the secret talks he conducted with the Palestinians "were not a : question of a Palestinian flag flying on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem," : the site of the former : Hebrew Second Temple where the Al-Aqsa Mosque now stands. : "There hasn't been any real discussion on Jerusalem with the : Palestinians, and it will be broached at the three-way summit." : "The issue of compensation for Palestinian refugees (from 1948) has : arisen," and "an international committee must be set up to examine the : conditions for this : compensation." : Ben Ami said that Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza will not : be dismantled as part of an agreement with the Palestinians. : "Out of principle, we oppose this possibility. The settlements will have : to be maintained, with adequate arrangements, but it's possible that : some of them will find : themselves under Palestinian sovereignty," he said. : Yediot Aharonot, citing unidentified US sources, said the draft would : give the Palestinians limited control over Jerusalem and calls for about : 40,000 Jewish settlers to live : under Palestinian sovereignty.
