Japan Chip Identifies Fingerprints

TOKYO (AP) — A newly developed computer chip can quickly identify
fingerprints to help safeguard electronic money cards, portable phones and
other electronic devices, the chip's creator said Wednesday.
The new chip, developed by Japanese telecom giant NTT Corp., takes just 0.5
seconds to match fingerprints with those registered in advance with a
slight touch on the chip's surface, the company said.
The chip is 1.5 centimeters (0.6 inches) square and 0.5 millimeters (0.02
inches) thick.
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone plans in a couple of years to commercialize
the new chip, estimated to cost one-tenth as much as earlier models, said
Hiroshi Takahashi, of NTT Corp.'s corporate strategy planning office.
Until now, several chips were needed to identify fingerprints and could not
be used on small electronics devices.
But the new chip can be widely used in note-type personal computers,
portable phones and other information-related devices to prevent
unauthorized people from using them, Takahashi said.
Takahashi said the new chip was to be shown at an international meeting on
solid circuits held in San Francisco this week.
