Japan Frets Over N.Korea Missile
TOKYO (AP) - Japan's Defense Agency has prepared an estimate of damage if
Tokyo were struck by a North Korean missile, predicting up to 120,000 people
could be injured or killed, a leading Japanese newspaper reported on Sunday.
Japan has grown increasingly worried about the possibility of an attack from
the communist country since North Korea's test launch last year of a missile
that flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean.
Japan's Defense Agency formed an ``Emergency Response Committee'' to study
the threat of a North Korean attack on Japan earlier this year, the Mainichi
newspaper reported.
Using U.S. military data, the committee forecast that a missile carrying a
biological warhead could kill or sicken up to 120,000 people if it struck
central Tokyo, the paper said, citing an agency analysis.
A missile with a nuclear warhead could kill or injure as many as 80,000
people, a chemical warhead between 1,000 and 2,000 and a conventional weapon
up to 100 people, the report said.
Defense Agency and U.S. Embassy officials were not available for comment on
Sunday.
U.S. and South Korean intelligence reports show that North Korea may be
preparing another test this summer. Japan has recently been trying to enlist
the support of other Asian countries and the United States to help put
pressure on the Pyongyang government to prevent it.
U.S. sends 2 missile-tracking ships to Japan: paper
TOKYO, Aug. 2 (Kyodo) - The U.S. military has sent two missile-tracking
vessels to Japan amid reports that North Korea is planning to test-fire a
ballistic missile, a Japanese daily reported Monday.
One of the vessels, the Observation Island, entered the U.S. military base in
Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on June 28, but left July 7 and moved to the
Sasebo base in Nagasaki Prefecture, the Tokyo Shimbun said.
The Observation Island last stopped in Japan three days before North Korea
fired a rocket over Japan in August 1998, the paper said.
The other vessel, the Invincible, which was completed this year, entered the
Sasebo base July 9, it said.
The paper quoted U.S. military sources in Japan as saying the U.S. aircraft
carrier Constellation, which stopped at Yokosuka from June 23 through last
Monday, had entered the Sea of Japan and begun drills.
The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk is scheduled to return from the Persian
Gulf to its home port of Yokosuka on Aug. 25, leading to an unusual situation
with two aircraft carriers on standby, it said.
The paper quoted a senior official of Japan's Self-Defense Forces as saying
such preparations are in effect aimed at preventing the test-firing of a
Taepodong missile.
The U.S. military, however, believes that a test-firing by China of its Dong
Feng-31 ballistic missile, which the U.S. claims was developed using American
nuclear warhead and missile technology, is more imminent, the paper said.
North Korean Anthrax Missile Feared by Japan, Mainichi Says
Tokyo, Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) - Japan's Defense Agency has estimated that a North
Korean missile targeted at Tokyo and carrying an anthrax warhead could kill
or sicken as many as 120,000 people, the Mainichi Daily News reported,
without citing sources. Agency Director General Hosei Norota said the
casualties from a biological weapon could be worse than those from a nuclear
bomb. A person who attended the latest of meetings called by Norota to study
the North Korean threat said Japan's military has no vaccines against
anthrax, the report said.
Fear of a missile attack against Japan has heightened since North Korea fired
a missile over Japan last August.
