-Caveat Lector- Newsmax-Inside Cover Sunday May 27, 2001; 11:05 p.m. EDT Clinton's Entourage Accused of Shakedown Scam Did ex-President Clinton's entourage try to shake down a local British distillery for a $70,000 presidential endorsement fee during a stopover in Wales this weekend? That's what Britain's respected Guardian newspaper claims in Monday's editions. "One cottage distiller claimed he was asked for £50,000 ($70,000 U.S.) for a presidential endorsement of Danzy Jones Wysgi Licor, his 'old style mellow' Welsh whisky liqueur," reports the Guardian. Former art lecturer Ben Jones told the newspaper that he couldn't believe his luck when a man organizing the president's trip to the Hay-on-Wye books festival telephoned him three weeks ago, saying Mr Clinton was "keen to drop in" on his farmyard distillery in Abergavenny. "He told me Mr Clinton likes to taste local produce where ever he goes, particularly whiskies," said Jones. Then came the pitch for cash: "He told me that 'Of course you realize the ex-president has to earn a living, and that when they were talking to a distillery in Ireland a figure of £50,000 was mentioned." After Jones told Clinton's representative that he couldn't afford the sky-high endorsement fee, he never heard from the ex-president or his people again. Clinton's spokespeople refused to deny the specific allegation Sunday, but insisted that he "only accepted honorariums for speaking engagements". Clinton collected $150,000 fee for a speech in Hay-on-Wye, Wales Saturday night. ======================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ======================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
