Colin Powell to Shun Clinton
Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell won't attend a summit of African
leaders scheduled to begin Thursday in Nigeria -- and the reason is he
doesn't want to be seen with former President Bill Clinton, who is set
to be on hand.
"They don't want to have anything to do with him," a Powell source tells
the Washington Post's Al Kamen Wednesday.
The two-day event, sponsored by the Organization of African Unity, is
supposed to spotlight the AIDS epidemic on the continent.
The snub comes despite entreaties from U.N. Secretary General Koffi
Annan, who personally asked Powell to come.
But, says Kamen's source, "The administration doesn't want to be
associated with an event in which Clinton will be a star. And Powell
doesn't want to be overshadowed or competitive with Clinton."
At first, State Department spokesman Phil Reeker tried to chalk up the
Powell snub to a scheduling conflict, explaining that the Secretary of
State had already committed to attend another conference in Nigeria on
U.S.-African relations in May.
That conference, however, has been cancelled.
