To prep for a talk on the state's energy crisis and to grab the good graces and checkbook of the Chief Executive of the United States of America, Gov. Gray Davis turned to the living textbook of how to work the system - B. Clinton. Mind, this is the biggest misery to hit that state since they got the box-office receipts for "Ishtar." Gray Davis' entire future depends on weaseling federal price caps on wholesale electric power from a still-smoldering prez. The gov's homework consisted of debriefing Bill. Private Citizen Clinton, understanding well the political crisis inherent in this energy crisis, gave Gov. Davis exactly precisely 15 minutes of his time. Henceforth, the mere murmur of the name Bill Clinton will cause steam to emanate from the collective nostrils of our western frontier's gubernatorial staff. MORE ON the burning Bush: Vermont's Jim Jeffords? Who seceded from the Republican union to become an Independent and thus give Dubya the senatorial finger? So who's the one lone single individual solitary sole soul who, they're saying inside the Beltway, exercised most influence on this guy about whom nobody much cared a lot before? The one who hustled him to switch parties and stick it to the president? Guess. Just guess. You'll never guess. That sly political dog Bill "go for the kill" Clinton. Our former Maximum Leader who obviously did some maximum boasting about it. In places other than the coffee shops of Chappaqua, where he currently does most of his politicking. He might walk softly these days, but he's carrying a big shtick. MORE ON Willy's non-presidential polka. William Jefferson, who never saw a photo op he didn't like, where's he emerge next? Besides his local Starbucks or Chappaqua's main coffee shop, he'll come front and center into the Middle East stalemate. The parties know him, feel comfortable with him and recognize the value of his familiarity with the situation.
