-Caveat Lector- finally the line between al queda and taliban is erased completely. the distinction was troubling and confusing to Americans, and inconvenient to a govt. that wanted to get rid of one, by equating it with the other.
Lindh did not join al-queda - the terrorist group financed by osama - with an explicit anti-American policy, but joined the taliban, a fundamentalist Islamic political group that was ruling Afghanistan at the time. The taliban did not have an anti-American agenda (indeed we gave them 40million + dollars just a few months before Sep 11, as our PARTNERS in the war on drugs) now get this - I know its shocking, but being an Islamic fundamentalist isn't illegal in America, freedom of religion is a guaranteed right here.
