Cecil forgot to mention the ONE etymology that I wagered on, the
one my dad (a pilot of B-17s, B-24s, and B-25s in WWII and The
Korean war, a pilot, I might add, with over THREE THOUSAND
*COMBAT* FLIGHT HOURS!) and I bet on:

I bet on the amount of length the ball turret machine gun belts
could hold on a B-17, B-24, and the B-25 Mitchell in WWII and The
Korean War. I got SEVERAL relies, however, from USAF and RAF
fighter pilots insisting that the phrase originated from them,
i.e., the belt lenght of ammo on FIGHTER PLANES, among other
types of fighter pilots, the most replies came from those that
flew the P-51 Spitfire (my favorite pre-JET-powered fighter
plane, btw), however, my dad STRONGLY disagrees with this (he
DOES agree that the phrase in that light WAS INDEED adopted by
various FIGHTER maintanance and flight crews, BUT ONLY AFTER the
BOMBER PLANE CREWS COINED IT!).

All in all, tho, I still believe my dad and I were right (and
THAT has NOTHING to do with the $100 wager....yeah, RIEEEGHT;-),
but thanks to the great replies from all of you, I ain't
gettin'my $100;-)

Warmest regards,

Mike
