Oliver North lets fly on TV
By Marcus Warren in New York
(Filed: 20/03/2003)

Col Oliver North, the officer at the heart of the
Iran-Contra scandal, has emerged as the first star of the wartime US
television ratings battle, after some highly jingoistic reporting from the
front line.

Embedded with his former comrades-at-arms, the ex-Marine has already
achieved more celebrity, or notoriety, for his reports than at any time
since his first brush with fame during the 1980s.

"Some awful racket is going to come down in that Baghdad urban renewal
project," he told viewers of Fox News this week, his joking euphemism for
the air strikes soon to be unleashed on the city.

Gloating celebration of US military might are the trademarks of Rupert
Murdoch's news channel, but Col North has taken the trend to new
extremes.

Having apparently blurted out the time for the start of military operations,
he drew a lurid picture of the fate awaiting Iraqis foolish enough to resist
helicopter assaults.

The colonel, whose convictions for destroying documents and obstructing
Congress during the Iran-Contra scandal were later overturned, has already
fronted a show called War Stories for the channel.
