PINPOINTING THE BIRTH OF HIV
New evidence suggests that the strains of HIV that caused the
AIDS pandemic originated in the 1930s, according to a report in
this week's issue of the journal Science.
Bette Kopler and her colleagues at the Los Alamos National
Laboratory analyzed the gene sequences of different strains of
the HIV virus, using supercomputers to estimate that the virus
began spreading in human beings between 1915 and 1941, most
likely in 1931. This contrasts with theories that the HIV virus
was introduced to humans through polio vaccination programs in
the late 1950s.
The results suggest that the virus may have been transmitted to
humans near the turn of the century and remained isolated in a
small population of humans until 1930.
"Establishing the date of emergence of HIV is imperative to
elucidating how transmission occurred and to finding ways to
prevent zoonotic transmission in the future," according to David
M. Hillis, a researcher at the University of Texas in Austin.
