.....In the following message, Marjorie is answering a
question raised by one of our new readers. It contains
scientific results which all EMF-L readers should be aware of
(particularly the "industry" people) ... and I want to insure
that it gets into our archives ... so, here it is.....

(Our archives, BTW, are getting more and more attention since
Robert has greatly improved the search engine aspects.....
I have gone to them twice in the past week.... Both times
 with success.....)

 Cheerio..... (Thanks, Marjorie.....)

 Paulo Saraiva:

Two long-term (lifetime) studies of specific-pathogen-free
(SPF) rodents have been conducted, and in both studies there
was highly statistically significant evidence of an increase
in cancer risk. In both experiments, which were controlled,
the animals were exposed to pulsed microwave radiation. SPF
animals are born into a sterile environment and are maintained
in a sterile environment all their lives. Using SPF animals
in an experiment of this nature is done because exposure to
pathogens (bacteria, viruses) can cause disease, and using
SPF animals removes a potential confounding effect from the
experiment. (It is very expensive, though, so it is not often
 done.)

A controlled experiment is one in which one group is exposed to
the agent of interest, while another group is NOT exposed to
this agent; and both groups are otherwise treated exactly alike
throughout the experiment. Here are the literature citations
 (both in English):

 Bioelectromagnetics, vol. 13, no. 6 (1992) pages 469-496. C.K.
 Chou, A.W. Guy, L.L. Kunz, R.B. Johnson, J.J. Crowley & J.H.
Krupp. Long-term, low-level microwave irradiation of rats.

In this experiment, 100 SPF rats were exposed inside a
waveguide to pulsed 2450 MHz radiation throughout their lives
(nearly two years) and another 100 SPF rats were
sham-irradiation (this was the unexposed control group).
At the end of the experiment, there was a highly statistically
significant excess of cancer in the irradiated rats, compared
 to the unirradiated rats.

Radiation Research, vol. 147, no. 5 (May 1997) pages 631-640.
 M.H. Repacholi, A. Basten, V. Gebski, D. Noonan, J. Finnie &
A.W. Harris. Lymphomas in E mu-Pim1 transgenic mice exposed to
 pulsed 900 MHz electromagnetic fields.

This experiment was designed specifically to test the radiation
used in cellular telephone systems. The strain of mouse used
was genetically predisposed to develop lymphomas (a kind of
cancer). This was a lifetime study of SPF animals; if I recall
correctly, 200 mice were irradiated, and 200 were sham-exposed
(the unexposed control group). At the end of the experiment,
the irradiated animals showed a doubling of lymphoma risk.

Some other studies of rodents have been carried out, but I
believe these are the only two lifetime studies of SPF animals.
I consider that these are the highest-quality experiments that
have been done, because they were both controlled studies, they
both used a large number of animals, both used animals that
were SPF, and both were lifetime studies. I am not aware of
any other studies that meet all these criteria. [Not many
studies of this type are done because they are very expensive
and time-consuming to carry out.] Because high-quality studies
of this type consistently show a cancer risk, organizations
that want to believe microwave radiation is harmless to human
health don't want to sponsor such studies, so there may not be
any more studies like this conducted.

The rat study was carreid out in the USA under sponsorship of
the U.S. Air Force. The mouse study was done in Australia,
sponsored by an Australian telecommunications firm; the senior
author of the study now heads the World Health Organization's
EMF health program and is serving on Britain's Independent
Expert Group on Mobile Phones, which at present is reviewing
 the scientific literature.

Organizations that want to believe microwave radiation is
harmless include national governments, wireless telecom
companies, broadcasters (because TV stations broadcast in the
microwave spectrum) and the IEEE (professional society of
 electrical engineers).

The ordinary citizen needs an institution that will represent
HIS best interests; most national governments now represent
business interests, when these conflict with the interests of
 citizens. -- Marjorie
