H.R.H. PRINCE EL HASSAN BIN TALAL SEEKS WAR AVOIDANCE
STRATEGY AND CULTURE AT TRILATERAL COMMISSION MEETING.
has received two speeches from Prince El Hassan bin Talal,
who was the keynote speaker at an April 7 Plenary Session
of the Trilateral Commission entitled,
"Islamic World and the Trilateral Countries
in the Era of Globalization."

In his keynote speech by that title,
the uncle of the current King of Jordan said:

"Moses Mendelssohn, the German Jewish philosopher,
developed a philosophy of inter-faith tolerance
based on the existence of a common denominator of all religions.

He considered that they all share a universal religion of reason,
each with its own traditional version of the revelation--
be it through the book of Moses, the Gospel or the Qur'an."

In another commentary--perhaps for the breakout sessions of
this panel--titled, "The `Arc of Crisis"--the Prince states:

"Plagued by a score of raging and potential disputes,
and with a broad range of causes of conflict,
the Region does not even have a mechanism of conflict avoidance,
prevention or resolution. Water and energy are likely
to top the list of conflict causes....
The revisiting of the `Great Game' of the 19th Century
is not along the railway lines of old,
but by way of energy pipelines.
However--alas!--`soft security', or people's needs and human dignity,
is regarded as of secondary concern in this Game."

He goes on to say that "a community of water and energy"
could serve the same "role that the community of coal and steel
played in postwar Europe. ... It could form a core around which
Regional cooperation can be nested, as well as a mechanism
for conflict avoidance/prevention/resolution."

After the Prince delivered the keynote speech
one of those commenting upon it in the panel
before the breakout sessions was former British intelligence operative
and British-trained "Orientalist," Dr. Bernard Lewis,
who is the originator of the phrase "Clash of Civilizations"
and architect of looney-tunes Zbigniew Brzezinski's "Arc of Crisis."

Efforts are being made to find out how Lewis responded to the Prince.

Interestingly, Prince Hassan is the President of the Club of Rome,
while also serving as Moderator of the World Conference on
Religion and Peace and Chairman of the Arab Thought Forum in Jordan.
