Rebels Fight Philippine Troops; U.S. Not Involved Mon Feb 18,11:43 PM ET ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (Reuters) - Philippine troops exchanged fire with Muslim guerrillas on a remote southern island on Tuesday but U.S. special forces who were nearby for joint exercises were not involved, a senior military officer said. Photos Reuters Photo Audio/Video U.S. Forces Build Up In Philippines (Reuters) The Abu Sayyaf guerrillas ambushed a Philippine military squad early in the morning on the small island of Tingulan, off the island of Basilan, said Colonel Roland Detabali, operations chief for the Philippine military's southern command. He said two Philippine soldiers were wounded in the attack and that the guerrillas suffered an undetermined number of casualties. He added the troops called in air support, and two MG-520 attack helicopters launched strikes on rebel positions. U.S. Green Berets started moving to Basilan, 560 miles south of the capital Manila, on Sunday for exercises with local soldiers aimed at wiping out the Abu Sayyaf, which Washington has linked to the al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden. A group of six U.S. special forces men was at a marine camp in the town of Maluso, about four miles from the scene of the fighting, Detabali said. "The Americans will not be involved here," he said. "This (patrolling on Tingulan island) was part of our operations even before the exercise began." Earlier on Tuesday, the guerrillas released two local farmers they had abducted at the weekend in the wake of pursuit operations by troops on another part of Basilan, Detabali said. The guerrillas demanded $1,000 for the victims but let them go when they saw the soldiers pursuing them. The Abu Sayyaf guerrillas say they are fighting for an Islamic state in the south of the Roman Catholic nation, but appear to be concentrated on kidnappings and random bombings.
