Saudis help Hamas with rocket project By Amos Harel Hamas operatives in Saudi Arabia have been sending money, instructions and information to their colleagues in Gaza for their Kassam rocket-development project, the Shin Bet security service has revealed. The information was elicited from the liaison between the two groups who was recently arrested and interrogated. The Kassam, which was developed in order to provide a longer-range alternative to mortar shells, was fired in Gaza for the first time three months ago. Since then, Hamas has used it against Israeli settlements at least 10 times. It carries a one-kilogram warhead and has a range of 1.5-3 kilometers. However, Israel has learned that an improved version, with a range of up to five kilometers, is already in the advanced stages of development. Fired from the Gaza Strip, such a rocket could reach the southern suburbs of Ashkelon. Defense sources said that Hamas was trying to develop a deterrent threat against southern towns, similar to what Hezbollah achieved in the north with the use of its Katyusha rockets. The liaison with Saudi Arabia, Osama Zuhari Hamad Krika'a, is a 27-year-old resident of Gaza City. He was arrested at the Rafah border crossing on December 18, while en route to Saudi Arabia. Krika'a told his interrogators that he had joined Hamas last August and had been sent to Saudi Arabia for the first time in September. The "cover" for his trip was a pilgrimage to Mecca. While there, he delivered messages to local Hamas activists and was given money to bring back to Gaza. In December, Krika'a was asked to go to Saudi Arabia again, using the cover story of a medical problem that required special treatment. He was arrested, however, by the Shin Bet, which found large quantities of information about the Kassam project on his person. Krika'a told his interrogators that once the rocket was operational, instructions for making it would have been transferred to Hamas cells on the West Bank, so that cities in central Israel could also be threatened. The West Bank's "arms industry" is considered less sophisticated than that of Gaza. One of the Kassam's coordinators was Adnan al-Rul, who is also high on Israel's wanted list. Al-Rul is considered an expert in preparing weapons, including rockets, mortars and bombs. Another key figure is Nidal Frihat, who recruited Krika'a. Shin Bet officials said that Israel had asked the Palestinian Authority to arrest Frihat several times, but the PA had not done so. This is not the first time information and money has been smuggled to terrorist groups in the territories from Arab states.
