Sharon could face police questioning in loan probe
JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon could be next in line to face police questioning as part of a probe into a 1.5-million-dollar loan from a South African businessman, Israeli newspapers said Friday.
One of Sharon’s sons was quizzed by fraud squad investigators earlier this week about the loan from Cyril Kern, an old friend of the premier, to cover debts run up during the 1999 elections for the Likud party leadership.
Gilad Sharon exercised his right to silence during the 90-minute questioning, the Yediot Aharonot and Haaretz newspapers reported.
The Yediot quoted one magistrate as saying, “The reason that Gilad Sharon is staying silent is that he has something to hide.” Gilad’s brother Omri, who is now a member of Israel’s parliament, and the prime minister himself were the next in line to be questioned by the police, the newspaper added. —AFP
