Most of the wealth disclosed to the FEC belongs to his wife and kids. The senator from Arizona married into the family of a major beer distributor, Hensley, and his household owns at least $1,250,000 in Hensley-related assets. The One Group mutual funds and even the Anheuser-Busch (BUD) stock we see in McCain's holdings actually belong to his children. So how are McCain's kids doing? They're certainly not getting optimal returns, according to David Yeske. "It looks like he took the shortest distance between two points, and just allowed somebody to dump [money] into a bunch of funds," he says. "Once you mush all those together, they're all going to cancel each other out and you're going to get the S&P 500. And with all the 12b-1 fees, it's going to cost you 1 1/2% to 2% a year in operating expenses. For what you're getting, you might as well get the Vanguard 500 Index (VFINX) and pay 18 basis points." Not to mention the fact that the One Group funds all have front-end loads of 4.5% or more. Senator, are you listening? Your kids are getting whipped by the S&P 500 and losing good money to fees. McCain gets Dee Lee's second-lowest score (just behind Gore), largely for not having any of his own money invested: three out of a possible 10. As for the Hensley fortune, "He might also get left out of it. It's not that [wife Cindy McCain] may not be willing to house him, but he doesn't have any control over it."
