PAT BUCHANAN has little good to say about free trade, fat-cat CEOs and a globa
l economy that he says has bypassed America's working men and women. And he
has certainly put his money where his mouth is. With just 10% of his holdings
in stocks and the rest in cash, bonds, CDs, property and precious metals,
Buchanan has pretty much bypassed the bull market, assembling a collection of
investments that financial planner David Feldman calls the "Y2K survivalist
portfolio."

But he's nothing if not consistent. Says planner David Yeske: "Pat Buchanan
was vehemently opposed to Nafta [North American Free Trade Association], and
it kind of shows in his portfolio. Bonds, conservative utilities -- not a
very internationalist portfolio." It's true: You won't find any "bleeding
borders" here, no investments in foreign plays like Telefonos de Mexico
(TMX). Buchanan's loathing of taxes is also reflected in his holdings. He has
$500,000-plus in municipal bonds, all from his home state of Virginia.
Planner Dee Lee sees the bond focus as the work of a tax-phobic investor with
an ultraconservative bent. "Here's the reality: Would you want to get a 12%
[return on your investment] and pay some taxes or just get 3%? He's got his
money in resting places. It's not being used."

Also collecting dust is $250,000-plus in precious metals. And we're not
talking gold-oriented stock or mutual fund investments here: Buchanan has
actual lumps of metal in a vault somewhere. Even with Buchanan's small
collection of stocks -- including apple-pie telecom picks like AT&T (T) and
Lucent Technologies (LU) -- Dee Lee gives the self-proclaimed "economic
nationalist" a three out of 10 for having a sluggish portfolio. "It's
undiversified and not interested in growth."
