-Caveat Lector- Well, Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas is now on TV saying he will not run again. The walk-out continues. I have come to the conclusion that these Republicans are retiring in disgust and discouragement over the Bush administration's breaking campaign promises and endorsing an agenda contrary to the conservative values to which he was elected. I fear there will be more who will either resign or not run again. ~Amelia~ Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas Sources: Sen. Gramm won't run again Retirement rumors have surrounded Texas Republican for weeks By Tom Curry MSNBC Sept. 4 - Texas Republican Sen. Phil Gramm will not seek re-election, sources told NBC News and The Associated Press Tuesday. A former presidential contender and one of the Senate's stalwart conservatives, Gramm is set to make an announcement later Tuesday about his future. Texas voters have not elected a Democratic senator since 1988. RUMORS HAVE BEEN swirling for weeks that Gramm might not seek re-election next year. The Associated Press reported that Gramm told President Bush of his plans to retire in advance of his news conference. First elected to the Senate in 1984, Gramm is a leading voice of fiscal conservatism in the Senate. He won re-election in 1996 with 55 percent of the vote. If Gramm does step down, it would create a chance for Democrats to gain a seat in the Senate. But Jennifer Duffy, who tracks Senate races for the non-partisan Cook Political Report, a Washington newsletter, told MSNBC.com, "I just don't see Democrats having a lot of opportunity because Texas is so Republican." Texas voters have not elected a Democratic senator since 1988. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
