-Caveat Lector- JULY 06, 12:47 EDT Suspicious Gas Found in Nebraska By SCOTT BAUER Associated Press Writer HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Devices suspected to be poison gas bombs were found in and around a man's apartment, prompting evacuation of his building and nearby homes during night. Police Chief Larry Thoren said authorities believed substances found at the scene Monday were some highly toxic form of fluorine-based gas. Six devices were taken to the Hastings landfill, doused with diesel fuel and detonated early today. The homemade devices ``had the potential of doing great harm,'' police Sgt. Dan Losada said. Materials used in them could be obtained in any hardware store, pharmacy or grocery store, he said. Thoren said authorities called for an Army Ordnance Detonation team from Fort Riley, Kan., to help investigate. The FBI also joined the investigation. Authorities arrested Jesse Spurgin, 26, of Hastings, on state charges of suspicion of unlawful possession of explosive materials and possession of explosive devices. In addition, U.S. Attorney Tom Monaghan said his office would check for possible violations of federal law. Losada refused to comment on Spurgin's background or on any possible motive. A search of Spurgin's apartment turned up ``lots of chemicals,'' Losada said, but he wouldn't elaborate. About 200 people living within a block of the apartment were evacuated Monday evening and power to the area was shut off. Residents of nearby homes were allowed to return shortly after 7:30 a.m. today, but the State Fire Marshals office today condemned the three-story apartment building for faulty wiring and fire alarms. The discovery was made after police in this town of 23,000 were called to the apartment complex to settle a disturbance. Witnesses said officers found a man who was waving a bottle he called a bomb and yelling that more bombs were scattered around the area.
