Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Rumsfeld was an administrative assistant to Reps. Dave Dennison of Ohio and
Robert Griffin of Michigan from 1958 to 1960. From 1960 to 1962, he was with
investment banking firm AG Becker & Co. (a subsidiary of the Becker Warburg
Paribas Group, acquired by Merrill Lynch in 1984). He ran for Congress in
1962. Rumsfeld has served in every Republican presidential administration
since Nixon, and he has been an executive of and/or on the boards of numerous
companies, including GD Searle (now a subsidiary of Pharmacia); General
Instrument (bought by Motorola); Gulfstream Aerospace (bought by General
Dynamics); Gialead Sciences; The Tribune Co. (owner of The Chicago Tribune);
Amylin Pharmaceuticals; Asea Brown Boveri; Kellogg; Sears; and Allstate.

The "New Trier Mafia"
Edgar Jannotta of the Chicago investment banking house William Blair & Co.
was the campaign manager in Rumsfeld's first run for Congress in 1962. Other
fundraisers includeternational, Robert Calvin of Motorola; and Hall "Cap"
Adams Jr., former Chairman and CEO of Leo Burnett USA. Adams ran their Philip
Morris account from 1961 until he retired. These were all pals from the
wealthy New Trier township of Illinois (according to a story in the Chicago
Sun Times, "The equalized assessed valuation of New Trier district property
is $757,000 per pupil, compared with Chicago's $91,000.") Their campaign
operatives included Jeb Stuart Magruder, who was later sent to prison for
Watergate-related perjury.
"In 1985, Monsanto bought Searle for $2.7 billion. The investment banking
work, generating a $1.8-million fee, was handed to William Blair, whose
managing partner was Ned Jannotta. On leaving Searle after the sale, Rumsfeld
was named a senior advisor to Blair while he figured out what to do next."

1999-2001. William McCormick Blair Jr.'s old crony Newton Minow, and Lasker
crony former congressman Paul G. Rogers are Advisory Trustees. Other current
Trustees include Frank Carlucci and Arthur Levitt of The Carlyle Group;
Kenneth I. Shine, president of the Institute of Medicine; and Harold Brown
and John S. Reed, both also members of the Council on Foreign Relations and
the Board of Directors of Philip Morris. And Bush's National Security advisor
Condoleezza Rice was a Trustee from 1991 to 1997.
