The Peace Plan Is Dead

by Charley Reese

"To sum up: The Road Map is dead, because Sharon was against it from the beginning, Bush saw it only as a photo opportunity on a nice background and Abu Mazen did not get from Israel and the U.S. anything that he could present as a Palestinian achievement."

Those are the words of an Israeli writer, Uri Avnery. He is exactly right, despite Condoleezza Rice's schizoid claim that the peace plan is still alive. It's stone-cold dead. Heck, I told you so the day it was announced. The peace plan was bound to fail because President George W. Bush is too gutless to confront Israeli Prime Minster Ariel Sharon, and a Palestinian state is the last thing in the world Sharon wants.

The Palestinian prime minister, Abu Mazen (also known as Mahmoud Abbas), got a cease-fire, but, of course, Sharon simply continued to assassinate Palestinian leaders until he finally provoked the bus bombing. It was Sharon who violated the cease-fire, just as it was Sharon who started the intifada, but America's lap-dog media will never tell you that.

You have to understand the language of propaganda. All Sharon has said over and over — while Bush, like an obedient dummy, repeats it — is that the Palestinians must "dismantle the infrastructure of the terrorists." Israel, of course, from Bush's standpoint doesn't have to do any of its share of the peace plan.

Well, dust off your brain and think about that. Have we, a superpower, been able to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorists? Has Israel, a regional superpower, been able to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorists? The answer in both cases is "no." Then how could a weak Palestinian prime minister with no army do it? The answer is, of course, he could not. Moreover, Sharon knew he could not, and Bush is too naive to understand what's going on around him. The way you discredit somebody is to give him or her a task you know the person cannot do. That's what Sharon-Bush did to Abu Mazen.

Now Sharon has a free hand. He can go on expanding Jewish settlements, go on assassinating Palestinians, go on demolishing their homes, go on building an apartheid wall, go on making their lives a living hell with closures, curfews and checkpoints. And Bush will stand there, pathetically weak and indecisive, just as he has for the past two years. Sharon is not only sowing the seeds of Israel's eventual destruction, but he is also cutting the ground out from under Bush. Bush's entire foreign-policy scheme is turning to ashes right before his eyes.

Remember, the grand scheme of all those neoconservative wizards who have manipulated Bush was that knocking off Saddam Hussein and magically converting Iraq into a liberal democracy would make it much easier to achieve peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The only problems with that scheme are that the Iraqis don't want a liberal democracy and the Israeli government doesn't want peace.

You might not care what happens to Palestinians, especially if you're a member of that cult of Christian Zionists who can't tell the difference between the Old and New Testaments and have never heard of context. But heretics aside and be that as it may, American politicians have allowed the Israeli government to drag us into the Middle East wars right up to our necks. We will pay in blood and treasure for that blunder for no telling how many decades. At least when the next terrorist attack comes, you'll know who to thank. One day too late, Americans will long for the isolationist foreign policy George Washington urged us to maintain.

In the meantime, I mourn for the Palestinians. They have suffered unjustly for more than half a century just because they want what our own forefathers wanted — freedom and independence. The American press, particularly the anchor-heads on television, made much of the six children killed in the recent bus bombing. Truly that is tragic. But how about the 438 Palestinian children the Israelis have killed during the past couple of years? Those are figures published in an Israeli newspaper. They were killed more or less anonymously as far as the American media were concerned.

Another Israeli writer, Gideon Levy, wrote an ominous piece in Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, pointing out that the next generation of Palestinian adults has had no experience at all with peaceful and decent Israelis.

"The only Israelis today's Palestinian children — tomorrow's generation of adults — have seen are those who imprison them in their homes, shoot them, beat them, and humiliate them ... Thus, before our eyes a generation is growing that is not only hungry, psychologically traumatized, unhealthy and without proper education but is also thirsty for revenge and consumed by hatred," he wrote.

One does indeed reap what one sows.
