BILLY Joel was released from a New York hospital yesterday, a day after he lost control of his car, swerved off the road and struck a tree. The 53-year-old musician, who recently checked into a rehab clinic, was said to be recovering at his home from injuries. It is the second car crash in six months for trouble-plagued Joel, who has endured a string of personal problems since his former girlfriend, the American television personality Trish Bergin, was married last year. In March Joel humiliated himself while performing on stage with Elton John at New York’s Madison Square Garden. During the performance he chastised organisers for high ticket prices, rambled about US military battles, slurred his words and nearly fell asleep.
